Oil
The Kooks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see the look, the look on your face,
I never should've come,
Never should've, ever should've,
Raised down, here to help you,
I took your hand, They only say,
'cause I see love, in your eyes,
Never should've run, never should've
Let you lie down, on my shoulder, babe

But ohhhhhhhhhhhowwww
And ohhhhhhhoooooooww

I ain't got no need for territory with you
I ain't got no need for territory with you
I ain't got no need for territory with you

I ain't got no need for territoryooooooo

I'll take you down, down to the sea,
Can't you see honey, you're lookin at me,
I've got god, some answers, some disease,
But I'm just heavy on your knees
And I see love in your eyes never should've run,
Never should've let you lie down on my
Shoulder baby

But ohhhhhhhhhhhowwww
And ohhhhhhhoooooooww

I ain't got no need for territory with you
I ain't got no need for territory with you
I ain't got no need for territory with you

I ain't got no need for territoryooooooo

Overall Meaning

The Kooks' song "Oil" is a commentary on the destructive nature of human greed and the dangerous pursuit of power. The lyrics suggest an internal struggle within the singer who recognizes the disastrous consequences of these human impulses, but also feels drawn to them nonetheless. The lines "I never should've come, never should've, ever should've raised down, here to help you" illustrate a sense of regret and guilt on the part of the singer, who acknowledges the destructive impact of their own presence.

However, the singer is conflicted, later admitting to "taking your hand" and seeing "love in your eyes." They continue to question their own intentions with the lines "But I'm just heavy on your knees" suggesting that while the singer recognizes the damaging effects of oil and greed, they continue to feel drawn to it.

Overall, the song paints a picture of the struggle between love and desire for power, and the consequences of giving in to the latter.
