The Kooks formed at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music, where they were all students. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Luke Pritchard, got bassist Max Rafferty involved in a college project, which formed the base of the band. After getting lead guitarist Hugh Harris and drummer Paul Garred involved, they took their name from the song Kooks on the 1971 David Bowie album Hunky Dory. When they tried to trademark the name, they found that in the late/mid 1990s a Swedish band by the same name released an album in Sweden called Too Much is Not Enough.
The Kooks released a debut EP and played gigs around Brighton, where they were based at the time. They were signed to Virgin Records.

I was told that someday
You'd be on your way to better things
It's not about your make-up
Or how you try to shape up
To these tiresome paper dreams
Paper dreams honey
You're telling me you're far out
You're all about to lie down for your cause
But you don't pull my strings
Cause I'm a better man
Moving on to better things
[Chorus]
But uh oh, I love her because
She moves in her own way
But uh oh, she came to my show
Just to hear about my day
And at the show on Tuesday
She was in her mindset
Tempered firs and spangled boots
Looks are deceiving
Making me believe it
And these tiresome paper dreams
Paper dreams honey, yeah
So won't you go far
Tell me you're a keeper
You're all about to lie down for your cause
And you don't pull my strings because
Cause I'm a better man
Moving on to better things
[Chorus]
Yes our wish's that we never made it
Through all the summers
We kept them up instead of
Kicking us back down to the suburbs
Yes our wish's that we never made it
Through all the summers
We kept them up instead of
Kicking us back down to the suburbs
[Chorus x2]

So at my show on Monday
At my concert on Monday
I was told that someday
Someone told me that you would eventually move on to better things
You'd be on your way to better things
You would move on to better things in life
It's not about your make-up
Your appearance doesn't matter
Or how you try to shape up
Or how you try to improve yourself
To these tiresome paper dreams
To these superficial ambitions
Paper dreams honey
These ambitions are meaningless
So now you pour your heart out
Now you're sharing your emotions
You're telling me you're far out
You're telling me you're unique or unconventional
You're all about to lie down for your cause
You're willing to fight for your beliefs
But you don't pull my strings
But you don't control me
Cause I'm a better man
Because I'm a better person now
Moving on to better things
Moving forward to better opportunities
[Chorus]

But uh oh, I love her because
But I love her because
She moves in her own way
She has her own unique way of doing things
But uh oh, she came to my show
But she came to my concert
Just to hear about my day
Just to hear about what's going on in my life
And at the show on Tuesday
And at the concert on Tuesday
She was in her mindset
She was in her own thoughts
Tempered firs and spangled boots
Wearing a certain style of clothing
Looks are deceiving
Appearances can be misleading
Making me believe it
Making me believe something that's not true
So won't you go far
So why don't you go far
Tell me you're a keeper
Tell me you're worth keeping around
And you don't pull my strings because
And you don't control me because
Cause I'm a better man
Because I'm a better person now
Yes our wish's that we never made it
Our wish is that we never succeeded
Through all the summers
Throughout all the years
We kept them up instead of
We continued to hold onto them instead of letting go
Kicking us back down to the suburbs
Sending us back to where we came from
[Chorus x2]
