The Kooks formed at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music, where they were all students. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Luke Pritchard, got bassist Max Rafferty involved in a college project, which formed the base of the band. After getting lead guitarist Hugh Harris and drummer Paul Garred involved, they took their name from the song Kooks on the 1971 David Bowie album Hunky Dory. When they tried to trademark the name, they found that in the late/mid 1990s a Swedish band by the same name released an album in Sweden called Too Much is Not Enough.
The Kooks released a debut EP and played gigs around Brighton, where they were based at the time. They were signed to Virgin Records.

She's got an eye for an awkward guy like me
I tried to love her back
Then I shrunk back into my wrap
And in the barrel of my gun
I hope I'm not the only one
Did you see the way she looked at me?
I tried to love her back
Then I shrunk back into my wrap
And in the barrel of my gun
I hope I'm not the only one
And in the barrel of my gun
I hope I'm not the only one
I tried to love her back
Then I shrunk back into my wrap
And in the barrel of my gun
I hope I'm not the only one
And in the barrel of my gun
I hope I'm not the only one
The lyrics to The Kooks' "Eddie's Gun" explores themes of attraction and insecurity. The first verse describes the singer's feelings towards a girl who is interested in him. He is awkward and unsure of how to respond to her advances. The second verse compares the girl to a honey bee, which can sting and potentially hurt the singer. The repetition of the line "I tried to love her back / Then I shrunk back into my wrap" suggests that the singer is struggling to reciprocate the girl's feelings due to his insecurities.
The final lines of the song ("And in the barrel of my gun / I hope I'm not the only one") are the most interesting and controversial part of the lyrics. Some listeners interpret it as a suicidal reference due to the mention of a gun, while others argue that it could be a metaphor for the singer's inner turmoil. The lyrics and overall message of "Eddie's Gun" are open to interpretation, but it's clear that the song explores complex emotions and deals with dark themes.
