Black And White
The Kung Fu Girls Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I think about you
Everyday
When I see you
You take my breath away
When I'm with you
My skies are blue
And when I'm without you
Babe my world turns gray

Well you weren't there
By my side
And you weren't there
All those nights I cried

And I don't really need you
Anyway
And I don't really miss you
At all
You thought I'd come crawling
Back your way
But I'll make it on my own
Cause I don't really need you

And I miss you
Anyway
Can't believe
How you walked out that day
Can't believe
The way I feel
And how we were in love
Baby was never even real

And as your white
Fades to black
And I fall down
With a knife in my back

And I don't really need you
Anyway
And I don't really miss you
At all
You thought I'd come crawlin
Back your way
But I'll make it on my own
Cause I don't really need you

I'll show you now
I'll teach you how
I'll watch you fall
You'll lose it all
Your way of tricks,
Theres no turning back now
No playing games you're all the same
Don't try to hide your every lie
Cause I've seen your disguise

And you weren't there by my side
And you weren't there all those nights i cried.

And I don't really need you anyways, and i don't really miss you at all. you thought id come crawling back your way but ill make it on my own. cause i don't really need.
And i don't really miss you at all.
You thought id come crawling back your way

But ill make it on my own
Cause i don't really need you

Overall Meaning

The Kung Fu Girls' song "Black and White" is a powerful anthem of strength and independence in the face of heartbreak. The lyrics describe the conflicting emotions that arise after a breakup - the pain of missing someone and the desire to move on and stand strong alone. The singer sings about how she thinks about the person who broke her heart every day and how they took her breath away when she was with them. But she also acknowledges that when she's not with them, her world turns grey. She expresses how hurt she was by their absence and their lack of support in her time of need, yet defiantly declines their expectations of her crawling back to them. In the chorus, she asserts that she doesn't need them and doesn't miss them at all. However, in the second verse, she admits that she does miss them, but only because she can't believe how they walked out on her, and how what appeared to be love between them was never even real.

The imagery of black and white, light and dark, is prevalent in the song. The singer describes how her skies turn blue when she's with her lover, and how they fade to black when they're gone, and she's left alone. Furthermore, at the end of the song, when the tables turn, and she takes control of the situation, the line "And as your white fades to black, and I fall down with a knife in my back" is particularly telling, as she describes herself as the one in power, darkening their white (innocent) image, while simultaneously experiencing a sense of betrayal, represented by the weapon in her back.

Overall, the song is an empowering anthem, an ode to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of heartache and the profound emotional experiences we go through in intimate relationships.
