For perspective, allowing the British to retain their muskets and colors was part of the Honours of War. If a foe was was allowed the Honours, they were allowed to march out of their fort, or camp, with their muskets and colors as their band, if they had one, played a song. Sometimes that song would be an enemy one. The troops would parade march past their enemy and then would stack arms in surrender. Then they would be treated as prisoners-of-war. Allowing Munro to retain their colors was a great sign of respect. Each color belonged to a specific regiment of foot, they carried the regiment's battle honors, and were also presented to the regiment by the King himself. So they're sacred. To lose one's colors was considered the ultimate disgrace as it removed the regiment's identity. Often the colors were destroyed to prevent their capture.
The receiving commander could offer parole. Parole was the formal release of prisoners, allowing them to go home, or back to home country, on the condition that they take no further part in the fighting until properly exchanged with enemy prisoners. If a paroled prisoner was captured again before this exchange, they would be executed for breaking the pledge. Parole was more common to enemy prisoners as, specially here in the wilderness, the enemy did not have the supplies and facilities to accommodate prisoners. Allowing the paroled prisoners to keep their muskets was also a necessity for defense against Native American attacks.
The Honours of War also had a public perception. If Colonel Munro's men had returned to England with their muskets and colors, it conveyed to the people that he resisted the enemy to the best of his abilities, and that the French deemed him a worthy foe. Therefore he wouldn't lose face, honor, or his rank.

Very nice explained. When was the last time honours of war were given? Was it WWII? I know that the British gave honours of war to the defeated Italians in Ethiopia in 1941, who were marching with their guns and colours while the British soldiers presented their rifles. Were honours of war given later to others, I wonder?

This is one of the most underrated moments in movie history.. performed perfectly in period form.. The entire film, cast, content was not recognized for its worth and accuracy.. definition of chivalry

Not that chivalrous - what the French commander was actually doing was getting the British to come out from their well defended fort and walk down through the valley into a waiting ambush by the Native Americans
