The Devil's Takin' Names
The Lawrence Arms Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Shall we dance?
Or maybe just limp around?
These feet are cold and beat, and strangers
To the ground.

The sound of the kick is arousing.
The couples are sweet in their love.
Tonight, we'll stagger up from the basement
Or fall to our deaths from above.
You've got those moves and those eyes
I've got these shakes and bad breath.

I've never tried that, but I know
I don't like it.
Or, maybe I do I'm just too weak to
Fight it. Where are you? I hate
To let em see me crying.

I'm gonna zip on my party suit
And show y'all something:
There ain't no such thing as strumpin'
For nothing
You can fly with us or hang on to the
Walls but the devil's takin' names
When the last curtain falls

I got a deep sick worry and I don't know
Why!
Where are you? what are you doing tonight?
Laughing and crying are almost the same
They just show everyone how much
Attention you're paying

So dry them eyes
Everyone else went back inside

Overall Meaning

The Lawrence Arms's song The Devil's Takin' Names is a song that describes a party where people are engaged in dancing and socializing while being drunk or high. The lyrics imply that the people in the party are running away from their problems, using drugs and alcohol to distract themselves from the issues. The song compares the dancers to strangers who are unaccustomed to standing on the ground, implying their inability to cope with reality.

The singers in the song are struggling with addiction and trying to escape their problems, but they are also tired of feeling this way. The lyrics describe a fear of being seen crying, and the singers' desire to dress up and show off despite feeling rotten inside. The phrase "There ain't no such thing as strumpin' for nothing" means that everyone is looking for something to fill the void inside them, whether it be drugs, alcohol, or attention-seeking behavior.

In the end, the lyrics suggest that despite the attempts to run away from reality, ultimately, the devil (a metaphor for addiction or suffering) will come to collect their souls.

@ScotCinamon

One notch more rated than The Broadways though... If you like old Lawrence Arms and have never listened to The Broadways, you're doing something wrong.

I love his band! I used to listen to their 2nd album all of the time as teen. The Broadways were an amazing band as well! I love the fact that they never change their sound. šŸ¤˜šŸ™ŒšŸ™

@lagronemikal

I saw these dudes play in my small hometown of Tuscaloosa, Alabama in an abandoned building lol. It (unbelievably) was the first show of that tour for them. I have no idea how that shit got arranged but I'll remember that feeling forever. Smoke or Fire opened. Saw them again in Birmingham, AL and my girl was pissed that I went while she had to work so I got the drummer to write her a personal letter exonerating me of any wrongdoing haha. Cool guys and I've been a fan for about almost 20 years at this point.
