As a bass player I loved the way the bass part ran backwards down the scale from C then ran up to the fourth (F) then back down the scale again. With a little C-F-C-G7 fill then starts all over. So simple yet magic. Piano Man has an almost identical bass line.

The first time I heard this song when I was on my second grade elementary. Until today I never forget the moment where I stood and heard this song, it is like going back to my childhood and remember everything so clear as if I was there. Adding to Shyla’s comment, I am 75 and can attest that this song is ageless. Like Wilburr, the song brings out both sorrow and a sense of peace. The song arrived within one year of high school graduation and instilled the same strong feelings then. It is in a class of its own. Not pop or folk, not classical and certainly not rock. I will always be grateful to the songwriter and certainly to Procol Harum for bring this wonderful song to us so that we could enjoy it for the rest of our lives.

I met my Husband 55 years ago, in a Bar on the back Street In St. Thomas Virgin island. I was there with a friend who worked there. On the Juke Box this song was playing, as I walked in, Whiter Shade of Pale, I heard that song for the first time. It stayed with me through the years. We are still together.
That Song is special to me, I heard a guy from Nigeria singing it today.

I'm 65 and grew up with music like this but was so caught up in Beatle Mania that I never heard this song until I was an adult. It was actually featured on a tv show, "Cold Case" in the 90's I think and when I heard it, I thought it was such a beautiful song. I've had more than my share of loss as well as euphoria in life and this song speaks to all of it. It has a way of touching all things that make us human both good and bad. It heals the bad and celebrates the good. Great music has a way of expressing one or the other but excellent music can do both and this song does both for me.
