Buddy
The Lemonheads Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She's coming over,
We'll go out walking,
Make a call on the way.

She's in the phone booth now,
I'm looking in.
There comes a smile on her face.
There's still some of the same stuff we got yesterday.
There's still some of the same stuff we got yesterday,
Yeah.

I'm too much with myself,
I wanna be someone else.
I'm too much with myself,
I wanna be someone else.
I'm too much with myself,
I wanna be someone else.

So we take off out Fiona's door,
Walk until it's light outside,
Like before when we were on the phone.

We have to laugh to look at each other.
We have to laugh 'cause we're not alone.

As the cars fly up King St.
It's enough to startle us,
It's enough to startle us

I love my drug buddy.
My drug, my drug buddy.

I love my drug buddy.
My drug, my drug buddy.

Overall Meaning

The Lemonheads' song "Buddy" was released in 1992 as part of their album, "It's a Shame About Ray". The song is about the singer's drug buddy, who he meets up with and goes out walking with. The references to a phone booth suggest that the song was written before the common use of mobile phones. The singer is looking in on his drug buddy and notices a smile on her face. The line, "There's still some of the same stuff we got yesterday", suggests that the two are continuing to use drugs together.

The lyrics also suggest that the singer is unhappy with himself and wants to be someone else. He feels like he is too consumed with himself and is seeking escape from that. Walking with his drug buddy is a way for him to take a break from his own thoughts and be with someone else who understands him. The two of them laugh together and find comfort in each other's company.

Overall, "Buddy" is a song about two people who are struggling with their own issues, but find solace in each other's companionship. Although they are using drugs together, the focus of the song is not on drug use, but rather on the human connection that is formed as a result of it.

My friend used to sing "I love my drug buddy" to me all the time and I had no idea it was an actual song until years after he died. I thought it was just a silly little thing that he sang to me. I am so happy I get to listen to it all the time. I got the chance to see the Lemonheads live a few months ago and when they played this song I hope my friend was looking over me. I miss you so much Harold <3 I love my drug buddy (we were both clean when he passed away)
