Kansas City

We loved the women and we had a good time
Then the trouble started with the gun
Kansas City with a friend of mine
We drank some whiskey and we really felt fine
Then we started leaving on the run.
Hey Ho Yippeeiayay
He shot up Kansas City on a very fine day
He shot up Kansas City on a very fine day
He shot up Kansas City on a very fine day
He shot up Kansas City on a very fine day
Kansas City with a friend of mine
We loved for a dollar and we drank for a dime
Now I'm headin' down to Santa Fe
Kansas City with a friend of mine
We left too late cut it mighty fine
Texas seemed the safest place to be.
Hey Ho Yippeeiayay
He shot up . . .
Kansas City with a friend of mine
It started rainin' turned the mud to slime
Now I'm headin' straight through Tennessee
Kansas City with a friend of mine
Now I'm headin' straight down the line
Nothin' more in Kansas left for me
Hey Ho Yippeeiayay
He shot up . . .
The Les Humphries Singers' song "Kansas City" is a narrative about a man who goes to Kansas City with his friend, and they have a good time drinking and loving women. However, trouble starts when a gun is involved, and they end up leaving the city on the run. The singer describes how they shot up Kansas City and had to leave for their safety. They moved from city to city and state to state, trying to find somewhere safe to be. Eventually, the singer decides to leave Kansas altogether and head down to Santa Fe, and then to Tennessee.
"Kansas City" tells the story of a man who emerges from a world of guns, alcohol, and violence. Despite the upbeat and cheerful melody, the lyrics are quite dark and somber as they describe the singer’s journey through different parts of the country, trying to escape the consequences of their actions. The song seems to be a commentary on the dangers and harsh realities of life, particularly for those who live on the margins of society.

I've heard this track first time about 42 years ago when I was 5 or 6 years old from my Dads reel to reel tape recorder. I fell in love with this song and I completely destroyed the tape listening to it over and over. I haven't realised this up untill now (2021) that the "Jet" effect which comes up @ 01:54 must have forged into my mind and I didn't even realise it but it must have played a role when I was making my living as a DJ in late 90's early 2000's. Without realising it untill the age 47 I just found out that this track is probably the main reason for my love of music all my life and that is pretty cool.
