Broudie and Rogers formed the act as the "perfect pop project", and Lightning Seeds broke through in 1989 with the psychedelic synth pop hit, "Pure", which made the UK Top 20 and was a minor hit on US pop radio and a major success on US alternative radio. In the 1990s Lightning Seeds became one of the most popular and enterprising of the era. The 1995 album Jollification was a critical masterpiece, spawning several successful singles. In 1996, Lightning Seeds provided the music and production for the official England anthem for the Euro '96 football tournament. The lyrics were written and sung by comedians Frank Skinner and David Baddiel, and the song, "Three Lions", went straight into the charts at number one.
Since the release of 1999's Tilt the act has taken a back seat as Broudie concentrated on producing the works of others. However, in 2006, Broudie reformed the band with a selection of new members, releasing a Very Best Of album, and performing a number of tour dates. In 2009, the band released Four Winds, their first album in 10 years.
Imaginary Friends

To swell the ranks of the clinically sad
Shaking off the past with a change of address
But keeps his telephone number and hopes for the best
He makes a list of all his favourite friends
Then leaves his footprints on the steps that shine
With tears that he has wept again... and again...
Hung around in places where nobody speaks
Got on line to an internet club
Played trivial pursuit with the goddess of love
And counted his imaginary friends, got up to ten,
Lost count and then went out to walk the streets
'Til god knows when
He met a girls who liked a bit of a laugh
He gained the youth that he'd forgotten to have
So now they mess about with things that are highly illegal
Often get mistaken for interesting people
And no-one ever seems to ring their bell
But do they care, well do they hell
They're gonna kiss and never tell again... and again...
The Lightning Seeds's "Imaginary Friends" is a song that tells the story of a lonely man who moves to a new place in hopes of leaving his past behind. Though he tries to shake off his past, he still holds onto his telephone number and carries the hope that things will eventually get better. In his new home, the man makes a list of all his favorite friends and leaves his footprints on the shiny steps. He weeps, remembering all of the hurt and pain he has experienced in the past.
The man eventually finds refuge in skateboarding and virtual reality, playing games like trivial pursuit with the goddess of love. He counts his imaginary friends and loses track, going out to wander the streets until he meets a girl who brings laughter back into his life. They start to engage in illegal activities together, but they do not care about what others think of them.
The song is a poignant narrative of self-discovery and moving on. It encourages people to embrace new experiences and seek happiness, even if others perceive it as unconventional.
