Return To Yesterday
The Lilac Time Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It was the day before the day before yesterday
When we thought everything would now go our way
We inherited a fortune of innocence
And they took it all away

We travel on the last bus from sanity
Through province town to cities of obscurity
And somewhere down the road it occurs to me
That I might have missed my stop

But I will not return to yesterday
Or smooth out the human clay
We'll face this new England like we always have

In a fury of denial
We'll go out dancing on the tiles
Help me down, but don't take me back

I heard a lover calling to Saint Anthony
Sadly treating love like her property
Only battles can be lost and so it seems we do
But I'm hoping for a change

I left you at the bus stop in working town
Now the service has been cut re-named slumber down
I can see you on the bars of your brother's bicycle
Now I hope you're not alone

And all the politician creeps
I know they want them back
And the couturier weeps
She knows they won't come back

And the lovers who seldom speak
I know they want them back

And me falling back into your half term kisses
No I will not

Overall Meaning

return to yesterday

In the opening lines of the song, the Lilac Time sets the stage for reflecting on past events that have changed the lives of the characters. The statement "We inherited a fortune of innocence and they took it all away" denotes a sense of lost innocence and shattered dreams. The lyrics go further to describe the journey that the characters take as they try to navigate a world that seems to be changing rapidly. The metaphorical reference to "the last bus from sanity" paints a vivid picture of the feeling of being out of control.

As the song progresses, the lyrics speak of the characters' refusal to return to the past in a futile attempt at nostalgia. They are determined to face the present and future head-on despite the difficulties they might encounter. The lyrics use metaphorical language such as "smooth out the human clay" and "fury of denial" to illustrate the strength and determination that the characters possess.

Just wonderful...a band who always make me feel either very happy, or a bit melancholy. Such a great songwriter

If ever a video captured the feeling of a song this is absolutely on the money.... Should have been number 1 all summer

Hard to believe how certain bands didn't achieve the success that they deserved. Lilac Time is certainly one of those. I'm 56 years old now, in 2022, although I heard this for the first time back on the nineties. Lilac Time is pure and timeless listening pleasure. The quality of lyrics and music should have put this band up on the very top.

We saw this video for the first time yesterday. We met them after this album was recorded and loved their work but we never saw this video. Funny part is the accordion...it looks as if it's running off in the video. ---When we met the band they were starting a US tour and were in DC. They said they lost their accordion and my husband happen to be an accordion player with a beautiful rare accordion. He loaned it to them and they took it across the US. And amazingly, they shipped it back to him when they were done! What a great band and song and now seeing this video, we have a great joke to go with an already great story! I wonder if they ever found the runaway accordion. lol

I love this band so much, Looking For A Day In The Night one of my favorite albums by any band

Frankie Elen

That was amazingly evocative. I'll investigate this band further. 🥰🥰🥰

Gorgeous. Should have been covered by the Monkees

"The Lilac Time's self-titled debut is the start of a perfect career."

Ummmmmmmmmmm - not sure who wrote that but they clearly don't realize that Stephen had already been active in music for more than a decade before this :D (He was in the very first lineup of Duran Duran in 1978, for example)

But yes, this is very nice, and glad to see it back on YouTube - I hadn't heard it in years...

So GOOD.
