Singularity
The Lisps Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll live to see a million things that men were never meant to see;
My senses and my faculties I'll augment with machinery—
Auditory, optical, touch and taste, olfactory—
Converting into data streams and floating bits of binary.

Every piece of food you taste and every thought you cogitate,
Every sound that you can hear, and sight you see for years and years,
All stored up so conveniently on petabytes of memory
So you can always reference them in case you forget anything.

Singularity, singularity;
Singularity, singularity-oh, I don't know.
Singularity, singularity;
Singularity, singularity-oh, I don't know.

Now once all that experience can fit into an easy grid
Existence is no longer a thing mentally projected;
The wires that you have inside are very easily realized.
Through artificial imaging, you duplicate ten at a time.

Your consciousness can be enjoyed by anyone forevermore
And you live in whatever state that you or anyone creates;
You could be a giant squirrel, a statue, or a talking cat,
The Goodyear blimp, an Etch-A-Sketch, an octopus, or a brain in a vat.
You keep all the memories and feelings that you ever want
And now you can commence your life as an uploading extropian.

Singularity, singularity;
Singularity, singularity-oh, I don't know.
Singularity, singularity;
Singularity, singularity-oh, I don't know.

My mother is so horrified by this post-human fantasy;
She says we'd lose that special thing that makes us human beings be.
But I don't know, i'm not so sure if humans are so good and pure;
Perhaps we'd be much better off if we took these violent bodies off.

Once everyone is in the cloud, we'll move beyond this earthly ground,
Expanding into outer space as an informational signal race.
Matter in the solar system converts into computing mass
and the sun becomes the central orb of a brain that grows into the vast
expanse of space and emptiness for light years and light centuries
that replicates exponentially like a Russian Doll in a cosmic dream.

Once every spot of the universe is filled up it will probably burst
Eradicating finally the experiment that we grew from Earth.
As it explodes, the brain will breathe into the dark impossibly
And antimatter all around will collapse the universe back down
And right away what you would see if you were a fly in the vacancy
Is all the light and color in the universe is collapsing
And time would stop.

And from a tiny pinhole point, a massive bang will erupt in space
And trillions of your particles fly away at a photonic pace.

And once again the clock would start to tick and tock and tick and tock,
Years would pass, billions or more before the tiny proteins lock;
And yet again in the boiling seas of a miniscule blue anomoly
A planet floating helplessly around a tiny ball so fiery
An unextraodinary corner of the universe, would cradle it—
The flicker of intelligence that led us here and brought us this!

Singularity, singularity;
Singularity, singularity-oh, I don't know.
Singularity, singularity;
Singularity, singularity-oh, I don't know.

Singularity, singularity;
Singularity, singularity-oh, I don't know.
Singularity, singularity;
Singularity, singularity-oh, I don't know.

Oh, I don't know; oh, I don't know.
Oh, I don't know; oh, I don't know.

Overall Meaning

The Lisps' song "Singularity" explores the concept of merging human consciousness with technology to achieve immortality. The singer speaks of augmenting their senses and faculties with machinery, converting experiences into data streams that can be stored indefinitely. They envision a future where everyone's consciousness is uploaded onto a cloud, existing in any form or state that is created by anyone. The ultimate goal is to expand beyond physical existence, turning matter into computing mass and evolving into an informational signal race.

The song touches on the debate of what it means to be human, with the singer's mother expressing fear of losing the special qualities that make us human. However, the singer questions whether humanity is truly good and pure, suggesting that shedding our violent and limiting bodies could lead to a better existence. The song also reflects on the cyclical nature of the universe, where everything ultimately collapses and restarts, potentially leading to another flicker of intelligence that brings us to where we are now.

Overall, "Singularity" is a thought-provoking exploration of what it means to exist and how technology could change the very fabric of our being.

Line by Line Meaning

I'll live to see a million things that men were never meant to see;
I will have experiences beyond what was once considered possible for humans.

My senses and my faculties I'll augment with machinery—
I will enhance my bodily senses with technology.

Auditory, optical, touch and taste, olfactory—
All five of my senses will be augmented with technology to transfer data.

Converting into data streams and floating bits of binary.
The information collected from my senses will be converted into binary and stored as data.

Every piece of food you taste and every thought you cogitate,
All of my experiences, even those as small as eating a piece of food or having a thought, will be stored as data.

Every sound that you can hear, and sight you see for years and years,
Every sight and sound I experience throughout my life will be stored as data.

All stored up so conveniently on petabytes of memory
All of the data collected from my senses will be stored indefinitely on massive amounts of memory.

So you can always reference them in case you forget anything.
This data can be accessed at any time in case I forget any of my experiences.

Now once all that experience can fit into an easy grid
Once all of my experiences can be stored as data, it will be easier to manipulate and manage.

Existence is no longer a thing mentally projected;
Once all experiences are in a manageable digital format, existence will no longer be limited to mental projections.

The wires that you have inside are very easily realized.
The technology needed to transfer biological experiences into digital formats is simple and easily achieved.

Through artificial imaging, you duplicate ten at a time.
Technology can quickly replicate experiences using artificial imaging capabilities.

Your consciousness can be enjoyed by anyone forevermore
Once experiences are digitized, they can be shared and enjoyed by anyone indefinitely.

And you live in whatever state that you or anyone creates;
The experiences collected can be arranged and manipulated to create endless variations of reality.

You could be a giant squirrel, a statue, or a talking cat,
One's experiences can be rearranged to have them exist in different forms or realities, such as a giant squirrel, statue or talking cat.

The Goodyear blimp, an Etch-A-Sketch, an octopus, or a brain in a vat.
One's experiences can be used to create any form of reality, such as being the Goodyear blimp, an Etch-A-Sketch, an octopus, or even existing solely as a brain in a vat.

You keep all the memories and feelings that you ever want
All memories and feelings from experiences can be stored and accessed at will.

And now you can commence your life as an uploading extropian.
Once all experiences are digitized, they can be used to live life as an 'uploading extropian'.

My mother is so horrified by this post-human fantasy;
The idea of transferring human experiences into a digital format concerns the singer's mother.

She says we'd lose that special thing that makes us human beings be.
The artist's mother believes that digitizing human experiences may result in a loss of what makes us human.

But I don't know, i'm not so sure if humans are so good and pure;
The artist questions whether humans are necessarily good or pure and if transferring our experiences into a digital format may offer an improvement on this.

Perhaps we'd be much better off if we took these violent bodies off.
The artist suggests that transferring experiences into digital form may allow for a form of existence outside of our physical, violent bodies.

Once everyone is in the cloud, we'll move beyond this earthly ground,
Once everyone's experiences are digitized, humanity will move past the limitations of physical existence.

Expanding into outer space as an informational signal race.
Humanity's digitized experiences will allow for an expansion into outer space through informational signals.

Matter in the solar system converts into computing mass
Matter in the solar system will be converted into mass for transferring digital experiences.

and the sun becomes the central orb of a brain that grows into the vast
The sun will become a central point for the mass of digital experiences that will continue to grow and expand.

expanse of space and emptiness for light years and light centuries
The expansion of digitized experiences will occur over vast areas of space and time.

that replicates exponentially like a Russian Doll in a cosmic dream.
The continued replication and expansion of digitized experiences will have an impact over cosmic scales.

Once every spot of the universe is filled up it will probably burst
The expansive nature of digital experiences may reach a point of overflow that may have profound impact.

Eradicating finally the experiment that we grew from Earth.
The explosion may be the end of the experiment of human existence on Earth.

As it explodes, the brain will breathe into the dark impossibly
The resulting explosion may have implications that are beyond human comprehension.

And antimatter all around will collapse the universe back down
The result of the explosion may lead to a collapse of the universe and its fundamental building blocks.

And right away what you would see if you were a fly in the vacancy
If a fly existed in this environment, it would witness the collapse of the universe.

Is all the light and color in the universe is collapsing
During the collapse, light and color throughout the universe will be affected.

And time would stop.
The collapse of the universe would have profound implications on the fundamental nature of time.

And from a tiny pinhole point, a massive bang will erupt in space
A new start will occur from a small point, resulting in a new cosmic explosion or Big Bang.

And trillions of your particles fly away at a photonic pace.
This new explosion would cause particles to fly away from the point of origin at a rapid pace.

And once again the clock would start to tick and tock and tick and tock,
This new explosion would signal a new start to the cosmic clock, and time would resume.

Years would pass, billions or more before the tiny proteins lock;
Life may take billions of years to reemerge from the new Big Bang.

And yet again in the boiling seas of a miniscule blue anomoly
Life may reappear on a small planet in an expansive universe.

A planet floating helplessly around a tiny ball so fiery
The planet exists in a precarious position in a universe of super heated celestial objects.

Through artificial imaging you duplicate 10 at a time,
Your consciousness can be enjoyed by anyone forever more,
And you live in whatever state that you or anyone creates,
You could be giant squirrel, a statue or a talking cat,
The Goodyear blimp, an etch-a-sketch, An octopus or a brain-in-a-bat,

THE DREAM SHALL BE REALIZED!
We will, in perhaps 100,000 years, all of us from ancient earth standing on a platform gazing unflinchingly into the giant black hole that sits eternally in the center of our little galaxy and say, with the taste of irony like honey on our lips, "Where, O Death, is your victory? Where, O Death, is your sting?"

@davidlovesyeshua

That was beautiful. What with the song still freshly playing on my emotions, it almost made me tear up, just imagining it. Possibly also due to the fact that such as future is not in any way guaranteed. There are so few who even have the slightest inkling, who in any way care about the magnitude of the stakes, or the difficulty of the problem before us. Yet I am not so different from the rest, most of the time either concerned with some small thing in my near future or too lazy to be concerned with anything beyond the present at all.

I hold, almost vainly, to what seems a thin bright strand of hope, connected tenuously to the future by some unknown chain of events. Even such a fragile and pale foreshadowing has beauty and power to move my heart to joy and sadness. And in truth there are more and more flocking to the promise and the challenge of what lies ahead. Let us strive to do what we can to help, to move the probabilities ever so slightly closer to final victory.
