Substitute
The Litter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You think we look pretty good together
You think my shoes are made of leather

But I'm a substitute for another guy
I look pretty tall but my heels are high
The simple things you see are all complicated
I look pretty young, but I'm just back-dated, yeah
Substitute your lies for fact
I can see right through your plastic mask
I try going forward but I keep walking back
My fine looking suit is really made out of sack

Well I'm a substitute for another guy
I look pretty tall but my heels are high
The simple things you see are all complicated
I look pretty young, but I'm just back-dated, yeah

I was born with a plastic spoon in my mouth
The north side of my town faced east, and the east was facing south
And now you dare to look me in the eye
Those crocodile tears are what you cry
It's a genuine problem, you won't try
To work it out at all you just pass it by, pass it by

Substitute me for him
Substitute my coke for gin
Substitute you before my mum
At least I'll get my washing done

Substitute your lies for fact
I can see right through your plastic mask

I try going forth but I keep walking back
My fine looking suit is really made out of sack

Overall Meaning

In The Litter's song "Substitute," the lyrics describe a man who is a replacement for another person. The woman who admires him may think they look good together and that his shoes are made of leather, but the reality is that he is not the person she wants. "I'm just a substitute for another guy," he sings. He may appear tall and young, but he feels out of place and back-dated. The simple things in life are complicated for him, and his fine-looking suit is actually made of sack. The singer of the song wants to be accepted for who he is, not as a substitute.

The lyrics suggest the woman is not sincere and cannot be trusted. The singer sees through her fake persona and plastic mask. He tries to move forward but finds himself going back, making no progress. He was born with a plastic spoon in his mouth, indicating he started life with few advantages. The north side of his town faced east, while the east was facing south, indicating that nothing is as it seems. The woman he talks about has a genuine problem that she refuses to work out or face. He feels unimportant and used, and he knows that even his cocaine could be replaced with gin.
