Maxwell's Silver Hammer
The Lollipops Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Joan was quizzical; studied pataphysical
Science in the home.
Late nights all alone with a test tube.
Oh, oh, oh, oh.

Maxwell Edison, majoring in medicine,
Calls her on the phone.
"Can I take you out to the pictures,
Joa, oa, oa, oan?"

But as she's getting ready to go,
A knock comes on the door.

Bang! Bang! Maxwell's silver hammer
Came down upon her head.
Bang! Bang! Maxwell's silver hammer
Made sure that she was dead.

Back in school again Maxwell plays the fool again.
Teacher gets annoyed.
Wishing to avoid and unpleasant
Sce, e, e, ene,

She tells Max to stay when the class has gone away,
So he waits behind
Writing fifty times "I must not be
So, o, o, o"

But when she turns her back on the boy,
He creeps up from behind.

Bang! Bang! Maxwell's silver hammer
Came down upon her head.
Bang! Bang! Maxwell's silver hammer
Made sure that she was dead.

P. C. Thirty-one said, "We caught a dirty one."
Maxwell stands alone
Painting testimonial pictures.
Oh, oh, oh, oh.

Rose and Valerie, screaming from the gallery
Say he must go free
(Maxwell must go free)
The judge does not agree and he tells them
So, o, o, o.

But as the words are leaving his lips,
A noise comes from behind.

Bang! Bang! Maxwell's silver hammer
Came down upon his head.
Bang! Bang! Maxwell's silver hammer
Made sure that he was dead.

Whoa, oh, oh, oh.
Silver hammer man

Overall Meaning

The Lollipops's song "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" tells the story of a sociopathic character named Maxwell Edison who goes on a killing spree with his trusty silver hammer. The lyrics open with the introduction of a girl named Joan who is studying science at home. Maxwell calls her up to ask her out, but just as she is about to leave, he smashes her on the head with the silver hammer, making sure she is dead. He then goes back to school, where he continues to act out and play the fool. When his teacher tells him to stay after class and write lines, he waits until she turns her back before using the hammer once again to kill her.

The final verse finds Maxwell on trial for his crimes, and despite Rose and Valerie's attempts to free him, the judge makes it clear that he will not be let off. As the judge speaks, a noise is heard from behind, and once again, Maxwell swings his hammer, this time killing the judge himself. The repeated use of the phrase "Bang! Bang!" in the chorus emphasizes the violence and brutality of Maxwell's actions.
