You Never Need Nobody
The Lone Bellow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You never need nobody
You never been alone
And I try to get your affection
And all I ever do is wrong

You could break a heart, in your sleep
Yeah the way you move, makes a grown man weak
They all knock at your door
Saying please, please, I can't take no more

You never need nobody
You never been alone
And I try to get your affection
And all I ever do is wrong

You could calm a storm with your tone
And the way you sing, makes the mocking bird h'
The grass you walk on, gives way
Saying please, please, come back this way

You never need nobody
You never been alone
And I try to get your affection
And all I ever do is wrong

Give me your hardest fever
Loudest scream in the crowd
Darling these good times
Can't change, the way I feel bout you now
Give me your hardest fever
Loudest scream in the crowd
And all of these good times can't change
The way I feel bout you now

Now I know you got that smile
And the way you can drive a man half wild
I won't dance around this no more
I'm the only one you should smile for, yeah

You never need nobody
You never been alone
And I try to get your affection
And all I ever do is wrong

You never need nobody
You never been alone

And I try to get your affection
And all I ever do is wrong

Overall Meaning

The Lone Bellow's song You Never Need Nobody is a poignant exploration of loving someone who seems unattainable despite their need for affection. The lyrics focus on the singer's inability to capture the attention of the person they love, who seems to be in no need of anyone else. The phrase "You never need nobody" repeats throughout the song, serving as both a lament and a reminder of the singer's failed attempts to win over their love interest.

The description of the person the singer is in love with is vividly captured in the lyrics. They possess an undeniable power, able to make grown men weak, calm storms with their tone, and make the mocking bird hush. The singer perceives their love interest as untouchable and almost god-like, commanding the attention and admiration of everyone around them. However, this perception only makes the singer feel more inadequate and doomed to fail in their pursuit.

The chorus of the song repeats several times, emphasizing the futility of the singer's attempts to win over their love interest. Despite their desperation, all they ever seem to do is wrong, further compounding their sense of failure. The final lines of the song suggest a sense of resignation, as if the singer has accepted that they will never win over the person they love.

I am an old man, raised on Broonzy, Johnson, Eaglin, Leadbelly, Ray Charles and suchlike. Not much has come down the Pike since then to move me at first hearing the way those source singers did - that is until Lone Bellow showed up. they are authentic in a way that defies description and I can only thank them for the joy they bring. Now they must survive the vicissitudes of fame and greedy acolytes. For all our sakes I pray they can hold out, stay happy and keep the flame. with love, respect and thanks . . .

NPR put's it beautifully: "But if The Lone Bellow breaks big, which seems like a decent possibility, it'll be with songs of survival and redemption, written out of necessity rather than opportunity."
