The band's following grew fairly rapidly, with many fans sporting the "glamorous punk" image popularised by frontwoman Kate Jackson. Kate was featured in The Guardian's style section and the NME Cool Lists 2005 and 2006. When questioned about her place in the first list by The Guardian, Jackson remarked: "Probably because they didn't have enough girls. It was so overrun with boring boys, they needed someone to bring a touch of glamour."
The band originally formed through a series of chance encounters: when Kate, guitarist and songwriter Dorian, bassist Reenie, drummer Screech and guitarist / keyboardist Emma bumped into each other at public library counters, charity shop sale rails and the dancefloors of DIY club nights. The following quote appeared on their website and for many served as an introduction to the Long Blondes; "Our shared influences include the Mael Brothers, the Marx Brothers and the Bewlay Brothers. We do not listen to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors or Bob Dylan. We chose an instrument each and learnt to play it. Approximately three months after we formed, we played a victorious 25 minute set at Leeds Hi-Fi club. A success! We inherit the aesthetics of early Roxy Music. We have a lot of influences, sometimes we sound a bit like them, sometimes we sound a lot like them. Sometimes we sound nothing like them at all."
Their second album "Couples" (the quotations are apart of the title, an allusion to the David Bowie album "Heroes") was released in April 2008 featuring the singles "Century" and "Guilt". An album of early "Singles" was rush-released by former label Angular Record Corporation.

[Chorus]
Here it comes
Here it comes
Here comes the serious bit
Here comes the serious bit
Here it comes
Here comet the serious bit
Here comes the serious bit
Our friends say they are fun
And film stars they are fun
I like to just for once
But the milky beside had it hard
Even Cleopatra found it unnatural sign times
And thats the thing I haven't told you yet
[Chorus]
[Repeat: x2]
I could be a shoulder to cry on
Or I could be a body to lie on
But don't ask me for more than that
[Chorus]
Here it comes [Repeat: x2]
Do you know that its you
Here comes the serious bit [Repeat: x4]
The Long Blondes's song "Here Comes the Serious Bit" has a cryptic and mysterious meaning that can be interpreted in several ways. The lyrics "And that's the thing I haven't told you yet" insinuate some unknown or hidden truth that the singer has concealed. It could refer to a relationship that is not straightforward or may be in its early days, and the singer fears whether she should reveal her true feelings. Additionally, it could be a warning to the listener that something important is about to happen or be revealed, and they should pay attention.
The chorus "Here comes the serious bit" is repeated several times, amplifying the sense of suspense and anticipation that something essential is going to happen. The next verse presents a contrast between fun and hardship, implying that life is not always easy and that there are hidden struggles that people may face behind the facade of happiness. The line "Even Cleopatra found it unnatural sign times" could suggest that even the most powerful or famous people face challenges and hardships, highlighting the universal nature of struggles.
The final verse depicts a desire to connect with others but also a fear of commitment or vulnerability. The comparisons "I could be a shoulder to cry on or a body to lie on" implies the singer can provide physical comfort, but she does not want to be emotionally attached or bound by any expectations. The repetition of the chorus at the end signifies that what is about to happen, whether it is a revelation or an event, is significant, and the listener should pay attention.
