Fairytale of New York
The Longest Johns Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It was Christmas Eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won't see another one
And then he sang a song
The Rare Old Mountain Dew
I turned my face away
And dreamed about you
Got on a lucky one
Came in eighteen to one
I've got a feeling
This year's for me and you
So happy Christmas
I love you baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true

They've got cars big as bars
They've got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It's no place for the old
When you first took my hand
On a cold Christmas Eve
You promised me
Broadway was waiting for me

You were handsome
You were pretty
Queen of New York City
When the band finished playing
They howled out for more
Sinatra was swinging,
All the drunks they were singing
We kissed on a corner
Then danced through the night

The boys of the NYPD choir
Were singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas day

You're a bum
You're a punk
You're an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed

You scumbag, you maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy Christmas your arse
I pray God it's our last
The boys of the NYPD choir
Still singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas day

I could have been someone
Well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Can't make it all alone
I've built my dreams around you

The boys of the NYPD choir
Still singing "Galway Bay"

And the bells are ringing out
For Christmas day

Overall Meaning

The Longest Johns's song Fairytale of New York tells a Christmas story of a couple, an unnamed narrator and a character called Kathleen. The singer is in a drunk tank on Christmas Eve when an old man sings a traditional Irish song to him. He turns his face away, dreaming of Kathleen who he is in love with. Despite being down on his luck, he believes that this year will be better for him and Kathleen. They had previously talked about moving to New York, believing it to be a place where all their dreams could come true.

The singer reflects on the contrast between the wealthy and the poor in New York. While the people he sees have cars and rivers of gold, the wind goes right through them, making it no place for the old. However, he remembers a time when Kathleen promised him that Broadway was waiting for him, and the couple danced through the night. The song takes a dark turn as the couple's relationship turns sour. The singer expresses his anger towards Kathleen, calling her an old slut on junk, and she retorts by calling him a scumbag, a maggot and a cheap, lousy faggot. However, despite this, the singer still feels that he cannot make it without Kathleen as he has built his dreams around her. The song finishes with the boys of the NYPD choir singing "Galway Bay," and the bells ringing out for Christmas Day.

Two possible outcomes here: either my family will hate me for blasting this every single day this December or they'll end up singing along with me on Chrstmas day. I'll keep you posted.

@hawkspiral

I think instead of "I love you Jaidy" it might be "I love you JD," but that's just a guess?

@isaac_aren

"The rare ol' mountain dew" mentioned at the start of the song is another great Irish song. Very traditional and upbeat

@thelongestjohns

We often start randomly singing the diddlyidle dum's when we're travelling
