Set Me Free
The Lovemakers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Came home and you were on the phone with your girlfriend
again today so I went away

You're in my room telling her I love you I need you
Oh oh baby well isn't it time you moved away

I can't stand waiting around 'til she's gone
Spend some time with you but what can I do
Livin' together is fun cause baby I love you so
It's just that we we broke up a month ago

[CHORUS]
When you were my boyfriend
I gave you my heart and my body that's for sure
Now that you have a girlfriend
I don't think that I want you around here anymore
When you were my boyfriend
I gave you my heart and my body that's for sure
Now that you have a girlfriend
I don't think that I can take it anymore

At night when we sleep I pretend I'm your girlfriend
I hold you close to hear your dreams
I whisper things in the dark that you won't remember
Oh oh baby don't you still want me

You don't pay our rent and I don't get no action
And you still wear all my clothes
I can't leave you if you won't leave my apartment
You gotta let me go and set me free

Go and set me free
Go and set me free
Go and set me free
Go and set me free

[CHORUS]
When you were my boyfriend
I gave you my heart and my body that's for sure
Now that you have a girlfriend
I don't think that I want you around here anymore
When you were my boyfriend
I gave you my heart and my body that's for sure

Now that you have a girlfriend
I don't think that I can take it anymore

Overall Meaning

The Lovemakers' song "Set Me Free" describes a tumultuous relationship between the singer and her ex-boyfriend who has moved on to a new relationship. The singer comes home to find her ex-boyfriend on the phone with his new girlfriend again, and she decides to leave. The ex-boyfriend is still in love with the singer, and even though they broke up a month ago, he still tells his new girlfriend "I love you, I need you" in their shared apartment.

The singer reminisces about their past relationship, a time when they were happy and in love. She longs for it to be like that again and even imagines herself as the ex-boyfriend's girlfriend when they sleep at night. However, she realizes that it's time to move on because the ex-boyfriend is not paying rent and is still wearing her clothes. She tells him that he needs to let her go and set her free.

The lyrics highlight the complexity and nuance of relationships, especially when one person has moved on while the other still harbors feelings of love and attachment. The singers' longing for the past is palpable, but ultimately she realizes that it's time to move on and find happiness elsewhere.

I don't suppose you have a copy of kiss me that could be uploaded. I have it on an old cd and listened to it relentlessly for years, but new computers don't have cd's and I can't find it anywhere online. :(
