Nashville Cats
The Lovin' Spoonful Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Chorus]
Nashville cats, play clean as country water
Nashville cats, play wild as mountain dew
Nashville cats, been playin' since they's babies
Nashville cats, get work before they're two

Well, there's thirteen hundred and fifty two
Guitar pickers in Nashville
And they can pick more notes than the number of ants
On a Tennessee ant hill
Yeah, there's thirteen hundred and fifty two
Guitar cases in Nashville
And any one that unpacks 'is guitar could play
Twice as better than I will

Yeah, I was just thirteen, you might say I was a
Musical proverbial knee-high
When I heard a couple new-sounding tunes on the tubes
And they blasted me sky-high
And the record man said every one is a yellow sun
Record from Nashville
And up north there ain't nobody buys them
And I said, "But I Will"

And it was

[Chorus]

Well, there's sixteen thousand eight hundred 'n' twenty one
Mothers from Nashville
All their friends play music, and they ain't uptight
If one of the kids will
Because it's custom made for any mothers son
To be a guitar picker in Nashville
And I sure am glad I got a chance to say a word about
The music and the mothers from Nashville

[Chorus]

Kick it

Overall Meaning

The Lovin' Spoonful's song Nashville Cats is a celebration of the guitar picking musicians in the music city of Nashville. The chorus introduces us to the Nashville cats, who play clean as country water and wild as mountain dew. The Nashville cats have been playing guitar since they were babies and get work before they are two years old. The chorus establishes the importance and expertise of these musicians.

The lyrics go on to talk about the incredibly high number of guitar pickers in Nashville - 1,352, all of whom can pick more notes than the number of ants on a Tennessee ant hill. The singer humorously admits that any one of them could play twice as better than he ever could. He reflects on his own musical journey, expressing his gratitude for the new sounds that he heard on the tubes when he was just thirteen years old. He discovered that these songs were yellow sun records from Nashville. He was amazed by the freshness of the music and the talents of those musicians, and even though no one up north bought those records, he decided that he would.

The final verse of the song celebrates the mothers of Nashville, who encourage their children to become guitar pickers. The record concludes on another rousing rendition of the chorus, with the singer's awe for these musicians and an appreciation for the music and the community of Nashville.

Once this ear worm gets in your head it will NEVER leave. I heard this song 40 years ago and I still walk around the house singing this. I even walk down Broadway in Nashville singing this silly ditty. And yes we all love Nashville cats!!

ryantunks

One of the most underrated bands in the history of Rock n Roll!!!

Dee dee Bellina

Amen! ( that's a non PC Amen. Okay? all you out there in Musicland). I had the unexpected please of seeing John Sebastian, in an up close and personal concert in a park in Seattle, in 1992 or 1993. I was sitting @8 ft. away. We were all frozen in time, not the turbulent part, not the promiscuous? part, not Hawks vs Doves, pure folk/ rock music and the people who really love all music, if you love John Sebastian and The Lovin' Spoonful( talk about a perfect name for a group)! IAM going out to buy the
" album," again.

Amen!

John Lewandowski

This song is played on country stations, too and rightfully so!

John Abramson

I saw John Sebastian play solo in 1972 twice and he was the warmest, most heart grabbing performer I had ever seen. He helped to launched my own 25yr musical career!

I also know that to be true, the thing I find sad when I see the Lovin Spoonful together on a show like Sullivan after their hits, is the desperation on poor Zally's face as he as he waves his arms around like a comedian trying to get everybody to see him and not look at John Sebastian who resembles John Lennon. But I love the band, if Zally wasn't running interference so much I would love him too

Linda Branigan

What a tribute and what a lucky dog to have talent and make a living from it!

Your glowing/heartfelt
(never enough kudos for the "other" John)
reply of 10 years, just caught up with me. I had a flash of Tony Joe White's, "Polk Salad Annie," would be a good mix. They are both folksy...one obviously gritty, however, they both put a smile on your face and you want to get up and dance. JS is more listening pleasure, however again, I did a lot of " boogieing down" w/ The Lovin' Spoonful, being 16 and 17 years old, at the time.
