Rain on the Roof
The Lovin' Spoonful Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You and me and rain on the roof
Caught up in a summer shower
Dryin' while it soaks the flowers
Maybe we'll be caught for hours
Waitin' out the sun

You and me were gabbin' away
Dreamy conversation sittin' in the hay
Honey, how long was I laughing in the rain with you
'Cause I didn't feel a drop 'til the thunder brought us to

You and me underneath the roof of tin
Pretty comfy feelin' how the rain ain't leakin' in
We can sit and dry just as long as it can pour
'Cause the way it makes you look makes me hope it rains some more

You and me and rain on the roof
Caught up in a summer shower
Dryin' while it soaks the flowers

Maybe we'll be caught for hours
Waitin' out the sun

Overall Meaning

The Lovin' Spoonful's "Rain On The Roof" is a lighthearted tribute to the simple pleasures of sitting under a tin roof on a hot summer day, listening to the rain. The lyrics describe a romantic scene between two people who take refuge from the rain and find themselves getting lost in conversation as they wait for the storm to pass. The opening line, "You and me and rain on the roof," sets the tone for the rest of the song, as the singer describes the cozy scene that unfolds between the two lovers. The rain becomes a character in the song, as it provides the soundtrack for their conversation and helps to create a sense of intimacy between them. The verse "Pretty comfy feelin' how the rain ain't leakin' in" provides a sense of comfort, as the tin roof keeps the two dry and allows them to enjoy the storm without getting wet.

The chorus emphasizes the romantic aspect of the song, as the two lovers are "Caught up in a summer shower" and "Maybe we'll be caught for hours." The rain becomes a symbol of their connection, as it forces them to slow down and take the time to enjoy each other's company. The line "Waitin' out the sun" implies that the two are in no rush to leave the shelter of the tin roof, and are content to stay and enjoy each other's company until the rain stops.

Overall, "Rain On The Roof" is a sweet, romantic song that celebrates the beauty of a moment shared between two people. It captures the sense of intimacy that can be created between two people during a storm, and celebrates the simple pleasures that life has to offer.

1968, I was in Vietnam and had never heard of the Lovin Spoonful. A fella bought a reel to reel tape machine and had this album on one of the reels. I put on the headset and it started to play. It was like the music started coming from in my head and was coming out into my ears, absolutely fantastic. Of course all that tech is old now and listening to headphones is nothing new to the brain but The Lovin Spoonful will always be a great memory for me.

What an amazing description of the first time listening to music on headphones… many times, I have thought of and told others about the first time it happened for me, because it was so moving! To hear it described this way brings me right back, thank you so much!
