In The Light
The Lumineers Lyrics

I don't know why I just can't let it go
I don't know why I just can't let it go

Memory's old but I just can't let it go
The idea's gone but I just can't let it go

Time, give me my yesterdays
Save it for all you had in your eyes, I have gone away

Fate
Dealt you a tricky hand
Now you're just left alone in your mind
And I have gone away

I don't know why I just can't let it go
Memory's old but I just can't let it go

In the light, right here in the light
Right here in the, hold me and don't you ever let this die

Right here in the light
In the daytime
Right here in the, hold me and don't you ever let this die

In the light

In the daytime
Right here in the

Overall Meaning

The Lumineers's song In the Light is a poignant reflection on the weight of memories and the haunting nature of nostalgia. The opening lines, "I don't know why I just can't let it go / Memory's old but I just can't let it go," convey a sense of being trapped in the past and the inability to move on. The repetition of this sentiment in the chorus further emphasises this feeling of being stuck in a cycle of holding onto something that is no longer there. There is a distinct ache in the lines, "Time, give me my yesterdays / Save it for all you had in your eyes, I have gone away," as the singer longs to go back to a time when they felt more connected to whatever it is they are holding onto.

The song takes a turn in the second verse with the mention of fate dealing someone a tricky hand and leaving them alone in their mind. The singer's own absence is hinted at with the line, "And I have gone away." It is unclear whether they physically left someone or if they have retreated into themselves, but the loneliness and isolation are palpable. The repetition of the chorus is then followed by an evocative bridge that takes on a more optimistic tone, "In the light, right here in the light / Hold me and don't you ever let this die." The light can be interpreted as a metaphor for hope or a way out of the darkness of the past. There is a sense of urgency in the plea to not let this feeling fade away.

Overall, In the Light is a beautiful and introspective song that captures the complexities of holding onto memories, the pain of letting go, and the hope that can be found in the present.

I cannot get this song outta my head. It's so pretty.

I have mixed feelings about the album, feel the first half is way way better than the second half. With that said, I agree this is probably my favorite track on the CD. Saw them for the second time when they came to Phoenix in October, and it was hands down one of the best concerts I have ever seen. Magical....

Nemo

disagree second half is a lot more down tempo and personal. evokes more emotion that ive heard and received imho

akshat

maybe since this was so different from what i usually listen to, i loved the whole album equally. it was really, REALLY good.

I am almost on board with all of this. The second half of this song innparticular just makes me feel good. The second half of the album took more listens to appreciate, I'll admit. But I'm thankful for the band and the songs they give us. I really the coupke of songs they have done for the movies, give them a listen if you haven't as of yet.

chrispy199

i love the whole album and think this track (while good) is definitely not the best on it either

Aldo Jurado

Cuando la canción llega al segundo 0:30 le cambia totalmente el ritmo a mi corazón, pasa de ser un lamento a ser una plegaria al tiempo, a lo que no podemos recuperar.
