Nightshade
The Lumineers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some of us love to think of life as a game
Others are born into the royalty and can never behave
Some find a freedom locking men in a cage, oh no
Some priest insisted it's a test of the faith
And only holy devotion can keep the devils away
There's only so much that a man can pray, oh no

Oh, my love
Oh, my love
Spare my blood
Spare my blood

I saw the footprints in the white of the snow
I counted thousands and I was just a rider alone
Eighteen degrees and eighty miles from home, oh no
We built a wall to keep the devils at bay
A distant army was marching through the night and the day
I swore an oath and with my life I would pay, oh no

Oh, my love
Oh, my love
Spare my blood

Nightshade, won't you take me away?
And I can hold my breath for another day
But it was all, it was all for the throne

We were surrounded and the ending was near
All of the sudden, a ranger arrived, a savior appeared
Made it to safety, but the devil was here, oh no

Oh, my love
Nightshade, won't you take me away?

And I can hold my breath for another day
But it was all, it was all for the throne

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Lumineers' song Nightshade are rich in imagery, telling the story of a soldier's journey through an unknown territory, fighting to protect his kingdom and ultimately, for the throne. The opening lines introduce the idea of different perspectives on life, with some viewing it as a game and others being restricted by their social status. The lyrics take a darker turn as it mentions priests insisting that one's devotion can protect them from the devil, but the reality is that there are limitations to what can be done through prayer.

The narrative shifts to a specific event in a soldier's life, as he rides through snowy terrain and notices footprints. He stumbles upon a wall that was built to keep the "devils" out and realizes that a distant army is approaching. The soldier takes an oath to fight and protect his kingdom, even if it means laying down his life for the throne. The chorus repeats the plea for Nightshade, a poisonous plant known for its ability to cause sleep and death, to take the soldier away from the chaos and danger that surrounds him.

As the song progresses, the soldier finds himself surrounded by the enemy and accepts that the end is near. However, a ranger appears as a savior and helps the soldier escape to safety. The final chorus repeats the same plea for Nightshade, as the soldier reflects on his sacrifice and realizes that it was all for the throne.

Overall, the lyrics of Nightshade touch on themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the harsh realities of war. The use of vivid imagery and symbolic language adds a layer of depth to the storytelling and creates a haunting, melancholic atmosphere.

Oh meu amor
Oh meu amor
Poupe meu sangue
Poupe meu sangue

Oh meu amor
Oh meu amor
Poupe meu sangue

Nightshade, você não vai me levar embora?

Oh meu amor
Nightshade, você não vai me levar embora?
E eu posso segurar minha respiração por outro dia
Mas foi tudo, foi tudo, para o trono

I love how this doesn't just capture the mood of GoT, it's directly about the story too, specifically about Jon.
It mentions Melisandre with "holy devotion," seeing "footprints in the white of the snow," north of the Wall (and of course talking about the Wall itself). It even talks about the oath when you Take the Black, and the fact that Jon dies ("with my life I would pay"). And finally, it very clearly references the ice lake scene in S7, being surrounded and death certain, but "a ranger appeared," meaning Benjin Stark, and this being just before the Walkers breach the Wall. It's brilliantly written, captures the mood, the story, the suspense, ahead of the final season. #ForTheThrone

Alex Pennington it reminds me more of Robbs story, specifically the red wedding, but jon fits amazingly!

Jessica Caron

But why "all for the throne"? Is that line about Daenerys and not Jon?
