Morning Song
The Lumineers (Cover) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The carbonation in my drink
The bubbles rise while my heart sinks
And I'll I tend to do is think of you

Was it easier to pack your bags
And book that flight to Paris as
The plane began to move that afternoon
When all the trains have pulled away
From local stations in decay
It's I who waits, it's you who's late again

And did you think of me when you made love
To him, was it the same as us
Or was it different, it must have been

And all the pretty dames
They'll hug and kiss you all the same
And when they go, they're gone
They're not run-ning late
Oh all, all the pretty dames

And the kids you hold in your arms
With promises to protect them from harm
But they grow, and they go
And you're all alone
All the kids, all the kids that you hold

And it's a shame that it ends this way
With nothing left to say
So just sit on your hands, while I walk away
It's a shame, it's a shame, it's a shame
When my hands begin to shake
When bitterness is all I taste
And my car won't stop
'Cause I cut the brakes
I hold on to a hope in my fate

Oh oh ah ah hey hey
May you return to love one day
Well I hope and I pray
You get what you gave
Oh oh ah ah hey hey

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to this song are about heartbreak and lost love. The singer is drinking a carbonated drink and feeling sadness and heartbreak as bubbles rise to the surface. The entire song is a reflection of the singer's thoughts about an ex-lover who has gone away, possibly to Paris. The singer is left with thoughts of what could have been and questions about whether their ex-lover thinks about them too.

The song references the departure of the ex-lover through different modes of transportation like trains and planes. The singer says that they are waiting while the ex-lover is the one who is late, and wonders whether the ex-lover thinks of them while making love to someone else. The lyrics also make reference to the "pretty dames" who will hug and kiss the ex-lover just the same as the singer did, but then disappear from their life.

The song takes a more sentimental turn when the singer talks about the children they held in their arms, promising to protect them from harm, but the kids grow up and go away, leaving the singer alone. The song ends on a bitter note, with the singer holding onto hope for their fate, despite the heartbreak and bitterness they feel.

Line by Line Meaning

The carbonation in my drink
The bubbles in my drink keep rising and popping, just like the thoughts of you in my mind

The bubbles rise while my heart sinks
As the bubbles rise to the top of my drink, my heart sinks with the weight of missing you

And I'll I tend to do is think of you
My thoughts always return to you, no matter how hard I try to distract myself

Was it easier to pack your bags
Did you find it easier to leave me behind?

And book that flight to Paris as
And buy that ticket to Paris, leaving me here alone

The plane began to move that afternoon
As the plane took off, so did my heart, leaving me stranded without you

When all the trains have pulled away
When everyone has left and moved on

From local stations in decay
From the run-down, forgotten places that we used to frequent

It's I who waits, it's you who's late again
I'm always waiting for you, but you never seem to arrive on time

And did you think of me when you made love
When you were with someone else, did you think of me?

To him, was it the same as us
Did it feel the same as when we were together?

Or was it different, it must have been
But of course it was different, because it wasn't with me

And all the pretty dames
All the other women out there

They'll hug and kiss you all the same
They'll show you affection and love, just like I did

And when they go, they're gone
But when they leave, they're gone for good

They're not run-ning late
They're not like you, always running late and never around when I need you

Oh all, all the pretty dames
All the other women out there who could never replace you

And the kids you hold in your arms
The children we dreamed of having together

With promises to protect them from harm
Vowing to keep them safe and secure, no matter what

But they grow, and they go
But time passes, and they eventually leave us

And you're all alone
And we're left alone, with only memories of what could have been

All the kids, all the kids that you hold
All the children we could have had, but never will

And it's a shame that it ends this way
It's a tragedy that things had to end between us like this

With nothing left to say
We've said everything there is to say, and there's nothing left to do but move on

So just sit on your hands, while I walk away
I'm leaving now, and you can do nothing but sit and watch me go

It's a shame, it's a shame, it's a shame
It's a shame that we couldn't make it work, that we couldn't find a way back to each other

When my hands begin to shake
When I start to lose my grip and my composure

When bitterness is all I taste
When all I feel is hurt, anger, and resentment towards you

And my car won't stop
When I can't even make my car stop, it feels like everything is out of my control

'Cause I cut the brakes
Because I sabotaged myself and our relationship by pushing you away

I hold on to a hope in my fate
But even in the midst of all this pain, I still have some hope that things will get better

May you return to love one day
I hope that someday, you'll find love again

Well I hope and I pray
Because after all that's happened, I still care about you and want the best for you

You get what you gave
And I hope that you find happiness and love that's just as great as what you gave me

Oh oh ah ah hey hey
Just a simple refrain, longing for something that's now out of reach

Who hurt this man?

The pain in his voice throughout this song. This song is an absolute masterpiece. I find it hard to picture how much courage it took to write this song and then to perform it. Their best song in my opinion. Still listening 10 years later.

@IhaveaPhDinTV
