I wish the current trends in discourse didn't make it so difficult to discuss someone like Anger. People aren't monoliths. Most of us do some legitimately harmful things in our lives. The idea that you must either condemn a person and all they have ever done to the point of total erasure (deplatforming), or else condone/excuse everything they've ever done, is lunacy.

I wanted to write a comment pointing out something similar as you did. So I liked your comment. I want to add these thoughts: We might react in a similar way to the new generation's reception as them to Anger by lecturing them about how people aren't monoliths, as you say. While I percieve the same as you do, I do think it is quite interesting that today's reception of Anger and others like him is sceptical, not liberal at all but even conservative. It is wrong to show animal cruelty and that is why the author should not be celebrated (not to say: should be canceled). But the maker of this video, by the way he rates Anger I count him as a representative of this "new generation", is embeded in a completely different era than Anger and his contemporaries were. The internet can confront us with many opinions and possibilities, so many (the more clever ones I would say) develop a certain scepticism, always questioning, who is behind this, what is the message, and the like. The work (of art) and the statement is equaled to the person and that is indeed a problematic short circuit. When Anger made his movies, it was extremely provocative (just the fact that they went to court!) and engaged with fears of society. They don't have dialogue, you can only interprete and there are more ways to interpret it than looking for biographical paralels in the author's life. They really questioned society and as we see, they still have the power to do so! But in a very different way than Kenneth Anger would have anticipated it. Now, that is a real work of art isn't it? Something that gets a life of its own and maintains the power of engaging viewers in questions and encouraging the viewer to take a stance; as the new generation does. But on an end point, I would really like to emphasize that we need to pay attention to this short circuiting. Isn't is more important to talk about the issues than to idealise and demonise eachother? Yea, these people deserve respect for their deovotion to creating art out of their ideas. It is not the same as the cult of persons we have today- Yes, it is very important to look at the way we live our relationships. And we look at the way our heroes lived their relationships and it does not help to condone them and be frustrated but we can learn from how they failed with their own ideals and learn about human nature too. So tha's my two cents on the topic. I think the channel is interesting and I will follow to keep up with observing the reception of the "new generation"

There is an explanation for Eaux d'Artifice, actually: It is meant to be the first scene/quarter of a never-completed film about the Italian occultist the Cardinal d'Este, the grounds of whose villa the scene was filmed upon. The way that the statues and fountains are filmed to look unnaturally larger than the woman dancing through them and appear almost alive is in homage to the Renaissance artist Piranesi's sketches of the Villa d'Este, while the emphasis on water may or may not be a cheeky Freudian allusion to the Cardinal's rumoured... predilections, shall we say. Basically, it's a proof-of-concept fragment of a movie which would have had a bit more going on, but as it stands mainly looks pretty and has a dreamy quality.

Kodak just straight up destroyed his film?? WTF?! Couldn't they just refuse to develop it and return it? Or maybe report it if they thought it was that bad? I hope he sued their asses for that! Or that they have since publicly apologized for it.

It was extremely common for them sadly. Basically up until the practice of taking film in to be developed became irrelevant Kodak would destroy anything seen as "obscene". This varied from location to location depending on who was developing it. As a standard nudity was never developed but I have heard of things like pictures with mild drug paraphernalia (like bongs) in the background and gay wedding photos being destroyed. That is certainly one of the massive upsides to digital. There is so much creative freedom we take for granted now a days, even if distribution is still a problem. The ability to make and have art is such an important thing.

Personally I really hope that at some point in the near future something happens in the film world to shift more focus onto indie works. I would love to see something that is almost like a Bandcamp for movies taking off and getting popular steam

I wrote a thesis paper for art history on the esotericism in Anger's work so I was super excited to see this video! I think one thing that helps to understand Anger is how he viewed Lucifer. Looking at classical mythology and Milton's poem Paradise Lost to me I see Lucifer as this rebellious trickster entity who's not necessarily good or bad and I can see how Anger and Crowley could have seen this as well and essentially wanted to personify that. That's why I think you should take any of the bad things Anger has said with a grain of salt. I think Anger loves the idea of being the rebel and you can actually see that a lot throughout a lot of his works like in Scorpio Rising and Lucifer Rising. I'm not gonna ramble anymore about what I think about Anger but super cool video dude Kenneth Anger is a super fascinating filmmaker and I wish more people knew about him!

Oh to clarify why I mentioned classical mythology that's where you see the mention of Lucifer as a bringer of light. Also should mention that the rite they're performing in Lucifer Rising is to essentially usher in a new age and basically throw out the old gods and traditions for new. So what you said at the end of your video about Anger wishing for society to change I would say is pretty spot on.

A really excellent work. Such a shame that Anger is almost unknown in America and in the rest of the world. He is a genius, a living legend (95 years old this year)and he gave so much to the cinema.Personally i think Lucifer Rising is his most beautiful work,especially for the soundtrack.I'd very much like someone to make a proper official documentary about him, and that someone in my opinion should be Scorsese.

The movies of Kenneth Anger are extraordinary, and a true definition of the art film. While a sort of story flows through them, they're 'story' as a series of rich, rich images set to music, and you can't understand them with any form of narrative/rational logic. I couldn't believe (over fifteen years ago, on viewing it for the first time) the eye-popping strength of the visuals and lushly dynamic use of sound...AND that he made them AT THE TIME he made them is remarkable. Anger and his whole filmography first came to my attention in the documentary THE ART OF INFLUENCE, in a segment in which he acknowledged his debt to Jean Cocteau, whose BLOOD OF A POET in part inspired FIREWORKS...and whose friendship and apprenticeship to Cocteau came when he sent FIREWORKS to a festival of damned films in France and was sent a prize for poetic film a little later, with the letter accompanying it written by Cocteau himself!...

I found your channel at the start of the year and I've proceeded to binge all of your videos! I knew the horror genre has made an impact on the world but I never really knew to what extent. I knew about the films and the occultism, but the “tabloid” stuff surprised me. I appreciate that he hated Hollywood so much that he would write a book like that, but unfortunately it influenced the cancer that is tabloid media. Regardless, his film’s are amongst the most brilliant of all American cinema.

Ode to artifice was the film that got me into Anger. I saw it at UCLA in a museum setting and it was the first time I felt dread and ‘well, it is what it is.’ How I see it: on film the dress looks like the water of beautiful man made fountains. The water that makes waterfalls beautiful has only a brief moment of beauty when flowing down or propelled from the structure. While watching a fountain you never see the same water. It’s just water from the same source. Once it had its moment it lays in wait to be used by the structure for another brief moment. That’s pretty much the machine of Hollywood.

I wonder if there's more than a passing association to be had with the work of Guy Maddin, Lynch and Anger. There definitely feels like an aesthetic attempt by all to poke holes in romanticized Hollywood idealism, but there's also something that is intangibly sour somehow. I don't know. I liked this overview of Anger's work. But you really shouldn't apologize for an artist as if their faults will stick to you by discussing them. You spent too much time saying why you were anxious to talk about his work, but without giving real examples of what that 'hate' was he expressed. If you're going to make a video dealing with an artist, then it's important to present all the facets of that person and to trust that your audience will discern the good from the bad. I think that to act as if people will think you agree with someone just by acknowledging them undermines intelligent discussion (and what I otherwise thought to be a very good video essay). However, you often do a great job on your videos and this is simply room for improvement. In the meantime keep up the good work.

You know it's rather weird i'm a huge fan of "psychedelic" cinema and arthouse filmmaking as well as being aware of Kenneth Anger's films but i've never brought myself to watch his films for no apparent reason

By the way, I was thinking a really great topic for another "history of" video would be horror anthologies/anthology films. Trick 'r' Treat is one of my fave recent horror films, I love the old Amicus horror anthologies, and I just finished watching Body Bags and Deadtime Stories (not the one(s) presented by George Romero).

Yeah I’ve actually had an idea for that for a while and want to do it at some point, I love anthologies. I’ve been diving deep into horror short story anthologies for a while now. I love short stories and have wanted to make myself more well read on them so I’ve been doing that in my free time lately. Would love to do a video just about that but book videos are really hard to make because of how non visual they are except for the covers. But for sure I think I will probably do that at some point, really glad you liked the video that makes me happy to hear.

Thanks so much for making this. I do have to disagree about Eaux de Artifice - its has magical synaesthethia going on with the flowing water and the music. Also, Rabbit's Moon was lost for years, then eventually found and Anger reformed it and released it in 1974.

Anger was a major influence on many figures in the late 70's and 80's glam rock scene in Los Angeles and, by extension, the early California punk scene. Darby Crash of the Germs loved Anger's work, though I doubt he saw much of it. Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys took influence from Anger's more controversial aspects in his films and Biafra called Anger "the original filmmaker of shock and schlock."

What intrigues me is that Puce Moment is a fragmented version of an unfinished film Anger wished to create known as 'Puce Women', almost an early Lucifer Rising in his intent, to collectively tell multiple spectrum of characters within one scenario. Some of the storyboards can be seen in the leaflet for the BFI release.

Have Jodorowsky and Anger had any other relationship outside of him being at the filming of the circle scene? Jodo and Anger seem like they would've have been pretty close but as a huge Jodo fan I don't recall him ever talking about Anger.

@C 5quared I'm not too familiar with anger so I cant say about him but Jodo did call himself an artist first and foremost. He tries to translate spiritual experiences and psychotherapy into his art but he also uses it more often than not in a traditional artistic autobiographical sense. Jodo is still deeeeeep into what he calls "mystic atheism" so there's a lot of spiritual stuff I'm sure they share. In that video I mentioned in my last comment Anger refers to Jodo as a "magician "

@In Praise of Shadows I just found this youtube video of Kenneth anger awarding jodo a Chicago Underground Film Festival medal in 2000 for El Topo where Ken talks about his relationship with him. There's also this Animal New York interview partially about a film project between Anger, Jodo, and Dennis Hopper that never got off the ground that's pretty interesting. It seems like they're pretty close friends

Great job. Nice amount of depth for a short doco. Maybe the apologist part though neccessary but could have been a bit shorter. Angers visuals and colour palette are very unique, and I havent come across anything in the same realm.

I knew OF him. But now, thanks to you, upon much dissecting ( these 34 minutes will probably take as many weeks to digest and study) I can really learn ABOUT him. Only one minor correction I can offer. Bobby Beausoleil - Bo - so - lay. And for what it's worth, your pronunciation was way closer than my best guess when I read "helter skelter" and the much much better "the family" back in 1983.

I found this video today, having finished the “Magick Lantern Cycle” a few days before. A wonderful and very informative video. I read many comments about “Eaux d'Artifice” and I agree with them. I find it one of the best of the “Cycle” along with “Fireworks” and “Rabbit’s Moon”. In “Eaux d'Artifice” I thought that the iridescent water was slowly becoming more and more red as the video progressed, that the shadows were turning it into blood. It felt to me like a fever dream, a nightmare in which the woman was running away from all this blood, trapped inside a palace, with beautiful water that wasn’t potable. A depiction of decadence, of a superficial and meaningless way of living. I have no idea if that was the intention, but I had a much clearer opinion and perception about this one than let’s say about “Inauguration of Pleasure Dome”. I even enjoyed it more.

In King's Cross, London there's a venue, the Scala, that used to be a cinema that changed hands many times, but at one stage in the 80s and 90s would do all-nighters. Five or six films back to back. One night was all Kenneth Anger. I never knew his stuff before this but really got into him. I remember reading Hollywood Babylon all those years ago too.
This has been a nice walk down memory lane.

I thought about what you said when someone makes a hateful joke, that they likely believe what they are joking about. I think that those types of jokes could be purely made to get a reaction out of people, like how Crowley and Anger offended people in their own way. What do you think? Very good essay, I used to own some Anger videos, The Invocation of my Demon Brother, and Lucifer Rising. Interesting how becoming interested in one thing, (Crowley for instance) will lead to a myriad of other subjects and interests.

Once again, a marvelous video essay. I didn't know anything about Kenneth Anger, but he seems like a hell of a ride, no pun intended. I started watching your content when I watched your outstanding video essay about the impact of Gremlins in film industry. And I had, ever since, watched a lot of your other essays, like Beksinski's overview and Getty's The Evil Within film. Just a constructive criticism from my part: around 6:50, you mention that in Anger's 1949 "music video" film featured Yvonne Marquis, who was known for being the mistress of México's president from then, Lázaro Cárdenas. The pronunciation of Lázaro Cárdenas, to both his first and last name, are in the first syllable, LÁ-zaro CÁR-denas. Think of "MYS-tery" and "A-NA-tomy", which are pronounced in a similar fashion. As a Mexican and a Spanish speaker who really loves your content, I'd thought I'd share that with you, just as a minimum contribution to your beautiful essay about Anger's filmography.

I got into Anger's films during the mid-Eighties when I wrote about underground films for a college thesis. I still have my VHS tapes of Fireworks and Scorpio Rising. They were official UK releases, but I can't remember the name of the distributor though. I might go dig them out and remind myself. Good documentary by the way. [thumbs up]

The only criticism I'd have of this video is your (incorrect) pronunciation of Bobby Beausoleil's name. The word "beau" is the French word for "beautiful", and "soleil" is the French word for "sun" and it's pronounced "so-lay" - his surname should be pronounced "bow so-lay".

Great vid! Really well researched and narrated. Nice to see such a good treatise on a relatively unknown director. It's almost a shame we'll never get your angle on the Cremaster cycle, but it'd fall outside of the scope of this channel and I wouldn't want to derail it. I'll just wait for you to look at Melancholie der Engel instead ;)

One little nitpick: you mispronunciated Buñuel. It's "βuˈɲwel".
Oh, and bonus points for not truncating the "Do what thou wilt..." quote. That's a rarity, and certainly something heartening to see. I'm not a Thelemite, but I hate quoting things out of context and that's about as misquoted as that one Nietzche quote all the teens love...

I Knew Anger for his films since my teens but was pleased to learn in my adult years he did a book series as well. i read that he was finally able to publish his long awaited second volume of Hollywood Babylon after decades of litigation from the disgruntled families of celebritys.one of whom was Lucille ball who he claimed actually started her career in Hollywood as a Call girl a claim that ball and her family wear not amused by. Personally i am titillated by the movie fireworks my hart jumps and parts go hard and moist and juicy at the idea of being set on by 15 sailors and torn apart....Essentially it was symbolic of a gangrape a violent and primitive sexual act and a very common fantasy among both heterosexuals and homosexuals alike . But Personally I think Pasolini's SALO was and is a pretty explicit film that makes Angers 10 min Fireworks look like Childs play.

Very nice and interesting video as a whole. A few minor problems did bug me, though: 1) K. Anger "was".... ?! When did he die? It seems he's old, but not dead yet. 2) It took me a while to figure out that what sounded like "Boo Sally" was actually Beausoleil (which should be pronounced something closer to "bo-so-LAY"). 3) "Hollywood Babylon" is what he's most famous for? That book is ridiculed by the very few people that even heard of it. His short films are what he's fairly well-known for and quite influential.

So, I love your channel and analysis, however one correction. I do not believe that Anger has ever "hated" old Hollywood. By his own words, he loved it, and was encouraged by his grandmother to collect clippings. It should be understood that it is the scandal and darkness that makes up so much of the appeal (as it does today), and it's not a matter of "defaming." However, I will say that some of his content in the Hollywood Babylon books is unverified and dubious at best. Thanks.

No problem! I personally think he really did hate it though, he talks all the time about how movies are evil and how movies should have never become a thing. I think his relationship with it is pretty complex because he himself makes movies, but there is a definite dislike of a certain kind of aspects that old Hollywood represents I believe.

Anger was introduced to Crowleys A:.A:. order and have since been involved with his path upward the Tree of Life, to a prominent place set outside time and space. Of course you will have problems to decipher his persona, because most of it is hidden under the surface of the visible eye.

I love these discussions about how supernatural beings like lucifer are representations of abstract concepts and still things of the flesh at the same time it really shows that humanity has always understood these concepts we've had these ideas for a Long time and even created words representing them but are now simply trying to connect to each other through them which can cause pain and freedom
