Singer John O'Callaghan joined soon after auditions for the band with no prior vocal experience, along with musicians Ryan Osterman and Alex Ross. Together, they collectively released the EP Stay Up, Get Down. Shortly thereafter Ryan and Alex departed the band for unknown reasons, but were replaced with Kennedy Brock and Jared Monaco. The Maine signed to Fearless Records and debuted with a five song EP entitled The Way We Talk in 2007.

Free in spirit
Nothing dazzling
In appearance
We do the best with
With what we have
No, no, no
We aren't actors
We are those who sit up in the rafters
After all,
That's where
You will find the action
We're searching
For something
Just trying
To make it happen
We listen
To no one
Don't forget we won't forgive
They'll write a story of the lives we lived
Fucked up kids
There's a place for you and all my friends
When the sun falls down
A new day begins
Where feeling good is good enough
Take a left on College Avenue
And call your friends they can all come too
They'll write a story of the lives we lived
Me, you
We're searching
For something
Just trying
To make it happen
We listen
To no one
Don't forget we won't forgive
They'll write a story of the lives we lived
Fucked up kids
Fucked up kids
I am alone
But I'm not lonely
No, It's nothing personal
I prefer to do things on my own
And even though nobody knows me
No I'm not lonely
No I'm raw, and invincible
We are alone
But we're not lonely
No, It's nothing personal
We prefer to do things on our own
And even though nobody knows it
No we're not lonely
No we're raw, and invincible
We are alone
But we're not lonely
No, It's nothing personal
We prefer to do things on our own
And even though nobody knows it
No we're not lonely
No we're raw, and invincible
The Maine's "Fucked Up Kids" is an anthem for misfits who don't conform to conventional societal standards. The lyrics suggest there is a crowd inside that may not appear "dazzling," but they are "free in spirit" and "do the best with what we have." These "fucked up kids" are not models or actors but those who sit up in the rafters, looking for something to happen, seeking a sense of belonging. They listen to no one and won't forgive, but they are still in search of something, trying to make it happen. The song implies that even though these kids may be perceived as outcasts, they'll make the most out of their lives, and people will write a story about their lives.
The song's chorus highlights the need for finding a place for oneself, where feeling good is good enough. The lyrics suggest a place where these "fucked up kids" can come together as friends, even when the sun falls down, and a new day begins. They can be themselves, take a left on College Avenue, and call their friends to come too, and it's okay because they will write their own story about their lives.
Overall, the song seems to be about finding a sense of belonging, taking control of one's own life, and refusing to conform. It highlights the importance of being true to oneself, searching for meaning and purpose, and making the most of one's life, no matter how it is perceived by those around them.
