The Maine was created by bassist Garrett Nickelsen and drummer Patrick Kirch in November 2006. Singer John O'Callaghan joined soon after auditions for the band with no prior vocal experience, along with musicians Ryan Osterman and Alex Ross. Together, they collectively released the EP Stay Up, Get Down. Shortly thereafter Ryan and Alex departed the band for unknown reasons, but were replaced with Kennedy Brock and Jared Monaco. The Maine signed to Fearless Records and debuted with a five song EP entitled The Way We Talk in 2007.

I can't get off,
I can't get over
I want it all, I want it all
Inside of you
I call you up
You're getting off I'm coming over
You're twenty one
I see your eyes you're barely sober
I hear your voice
You're calling out
From me to you
I pour a drink
You move in quick, you're moving forward
Then you said,
No, whoa
I'm never gonna be inside of you
And I said,
No, whoa
I'm never gonna see inside of you
Because, I know, I'm gonna fall
And you'll be waiting for it all
Because, I know, I know, I know
I can't get inside of you, inside of you.
This fragile game
It's like a train that's headed nowhere
It never stops
And I can't see the exit sign
We're headed North
I see the cliff we're getting closer
So don't say that you just want to run away
Replay all the things that I tried to say
I'm 21
So you're getting off
I'm coming over
Then you said,
No, whoa
I'm never gonna be inside of you
And I said,
No, whoa
I'm never gonna see inside of you
Because, I know, I'm gonna fall
And you'll be waiting for it all
Because, I know, I know, I know
I can't get inside of you, inside of you.
I'm on a trip, I can't get off,
I can't get over
I want it, I want it all
Inside of you
I call you up,
You're getting off, I'm coming over
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
Noooo, whoa
I'm never gonna be inside of you
And I said,
No, whoa
I'm never gonna see inside of you
Because, I know, I'm gonna fall
Because, I know, I know
I can't get inside of you, inside of you.
I know, I'm gonna fall
And you'll be waiting for it all
Because, I know, I know, I know
I can't get inside of you, inside of you.
I'm on a trip, I can't get off,
I can't get over
I want it, I want it all
Inside of you
I call you up,
You're getting off, I'm coming over
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
The Maine’s “Inside of You” is a song that delves into the complexity of a romantic relationship. The opening lyrics, “I’m on a trip, I can’t get off, I can’t get over, I want it all, I want it all, inside of you” tell us that the song’s protagonist is stuck on a journey that he cannot recover from. He’s obsessed with his partner and desires all of her. The singer wants to be intimate with his partner, but she pushes him away, leaving him feeling frustrated and hopeless. He tries to call her up to make arrangements to see her but she is in a state of a drunken stupor, barely sober enough to make her own decisions. Despite this, the singer moves things forward, but his advances are rejected as his partner realizes she cannot go through with the intimacy that he desires.
The song uses the analogy of a train ride with no exits to describe their relationship, highlighting that it’s all-consuming and leading toward a cliff, a certain disaster. The singer is aware that he’s likely to come crashing down and his partner will be there to witness it all. The chorus, “No, whoa, I'm never gonna be inside of you. And I said, No, whoa, I'm never gonna see inside of you. Because, I know, I'm gonna fall, And you'll be waiting for it all. Because, I know, I know, I know, I can't get inside of you, inside of you” speaks of the singer’s frustration and acceptance that he won’t ever have the intimacy he desires, as both he and his partner realize the consequences of giving in to passion.
Overall, “Inside of You” is a sobering exploration of desire, intimacy and the consequences of giving in. The song explores the unfulfilled romantic desires of the singer and the challenges of managing one’s emotions within a complex relationship.
