The Maine was created by bassist Garrett Nickelsen and drummer Patrick Kirch in November 2006. Singer John O'Callaghan joined soon after auditions for the band with no prior vocal experience, along with musicians Ryan Osterman and Alex Ross. Together, they collectively released the EP Stay Up, Get Down. Shortly thereafter Ryan and Alex departed the band for unknown reasons, but were replaced with Kennedy Brock and Jared Monaco. The Maine signed to Fearless Records and debuted with a five song EP entitled The Way We Talk in 2007.

I'm dodging words, but she's saying the right lines
She made me, made me oh so crazy
But this time I feel like I'm doing something right
It made me sick to think about
Everything you put me through and how you left without
(Saying goodbye) And if it's really over now
This is the end
Of you and me
And everything I used to be
Back then it meant something
But you're living a lie, you just can't hide from me
You had me hanging on your last word
And now I'm feeling a little less than trusting
You had me wishing we were something
But left me here with a whole lot of nothing now
This is the end
Of you and me
And everything I used to be
Back then it meant something
But you're living a lie, you just can't hide from me
Love is a luxury
She said "I'd rather be in love than dead"
But now it's her, oh God now it's her
She's the type of girl who makes love... hers
I'm taking, taking all of my time (taking my time)
I'm dodging words but she's saying the right lines (the right lines)
She's made me, made me, oh so crazy (I'm going crazy)
But this time I feel like I got it right
(1, 2, 3, 4, 1)
This is the end
Of you and me
Everything I used to be
Back then it meant something
But you're living a lie, you just can't hide from me
This is the end (this is the end)
Of you and me (whoa oh)
And everything I used to be
Back then (this is the end)
It meant something (yeah)
You're living a lie, you just can't hide from me
The Maine's song "This Is the End" describes a situation where the singer has realized that his relationship with someone is over. Throughout the song, he sings about how the relationship has caused him confusion and stress in the past, but this time he believes it's for the best. He feels like he's doing the right thing by ending things with this person. However, he also acknowledges that he's still hurt by the way the relationship ended.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrases, "This is the end of you and me," and "everything I used to be." This shows that the singer feels like the relationship was a significant part of his life and identity, but now that it's over, he has to come to terms with who he is without that person. The line, "Love is a luxury," is interesting because it suggests that the singer sees love as something people desire but don't truly need. He may feel that he's better off without this person in his life, even though he once wanted to be with her.
Overall, "This Is the End" is a song about letting go of a relationship that was significant but ultimately not meant to last. The singer has come to terms with the end and is ready to move on and find himself again.
