We
The Maine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been changing
You're still waiting on me
Just wait for me

And I am on my own,
But it's nice to see you came along.
And this might sound wrong,
But I can only tell you through a song.
And I will take my time,
'Cause it's the only thing that's on my side.
And this can't be real,
Tell me, do you ever feel?

Do you ever feel,
Do you ever feel? [x2]

Oh I've been changing,
You're still waiting on me.
(Never let go, never let go.)
She said I'll never grow up.

Oh yeah I've been changing,
You're still waiting on me.
(Never let go, never let go.)
She said I'll never grow up.

Two years now since I met you,
And I just can't forget about you.
You don't know what you do to me,
Oh you don't know what you're doing to me.
And baby I'm not lost,
I'm just a little confused on what to do.
And it's all on me,
Oh it's not you why can't you see?

Do you ever feel
Do you ever feel? [x2]

Oh I've been changing,
You're still waiting on me.
(Never let go, never let go.)
She said I'll never grow up. [x2]

Oh yeah I've been changing,
You're still waiting on me.
(Never let go, never let go.)
She said I'll never grow up.

Oh who are you now?
(Oh who are you now?)
Oh who are you now?
(Oh who are you now?)
This shit is so played out.
It's so played out.
So played out.

Yeah I've been changing.
You're still waiting on me
Please wait for me.

I've been changing
You're still waiting on me

(Never let go, never let go)
She said I'll never grow up.

Overall Meaning

The Maine's song We Change We Wait is a reflection on personal growth, and how this can impact relationships, and identity. The lyrics convey a message about taking one's time to evolve and move forward in life, and how this can impact the company that we keep. The opening lines "I've been changing, you're still waiting on me" are an indication of the tension that growth and change can have on romantic relationships. Growth and change can pull people in different directions, and it can be difficult to keep up with a partner's transformation.

Later in the song, the lyrics "And baby I'm not lost, I'm just a little confused on what to do" hint at existential questioning, and how this can lead to confusion and contemplation. As people grow, they inevitably begin to question their purpose and the direction of their life. This questioning process can take time, and the song acknowledges the importance of taking one's time to figure it all out. Ultimately, the song concludes with the plea "Please wait for me" emphasizing that growth takes time and effort, and that the right people will be patient and supportive.

In We Change We Wait, The Maine manages to capture the internal struggle of personal growth, and how it can impact those around us. The song can be interpreted as a message of self-acceptance, and an acknowledgment that personal growth is a lifelong journey.

@danman6669 while this is true and worth knowing for non-english speakers, personally I think that they should be considered more interchangeable than they are normally treated. Being that both have the same Latin root, and that they have synonymous uses in many cases.

While complement is more directly enhancing/completing something else, because compliment is a form of flattery towards something else, that (particularly in the case of singing) the singers do flatter each other which has the effect of complementing each other.

So they really could do away with one word or the other and it would hardly be the most confusing thing to new speakers and would probably help native speakers by trimming down extra words that are normally understood contextually either way.

Of course that is just my personal opinion.

Now THIS is how you do a song with a feature on it! No more just 1 verse for each artist, chorus, repeat. I want all future features to blend as well as this does with everyone doing a little here and there throughout the song! Amazing song!

Robert Acevedo

That's a good point.

Bryan Burcham

It's called a call and answer... been in music for a loooong time. Turn the radio off and find something not "pop"

Anth ony

@Bryan Burcham Amazing how you just assume I listen to the radio. I haven't listened to the radio in 10+ years for music and "pop" is not a genre that I listen to so, not sure exactly what you're getting at?

YFDB

@Bryan Burcham it’s called “call and response.” I may not know much about music theory, but I do know that if I’m finna be a dork about it on the internet I’m not about to misname an extremely popular technique.
