John Phillips
The Mamas & the Papas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I call your name, but you're not there
Was I to blame, for being unfair?
Don't you know I can't sleep at night
Since you've been gone

I never weep at night
I can't go on
Don't you know I can't take it
I don't know who can

I'm not gonna make it
I'm not that kind of man
Don't you know I can't sleep at night
But just the same

I never weep at night
I call your name
Don't you know I can't take it
I don't know who can

I'm not gonna make it
I'm not that kind of man
Don't you know I can't sleep at night, but just the same, yeah

I never weep at night, I call your name (Ahh I call your name)
I never weep at night, I call your name, yeah

Overall Meaning

The Mamas & the Papas's song I Call Your Name is one of the most emotional and heartbreaking love songs of all time. The song speaks of the frustration, despair, and longing that come after a painful breakup. The lyrics are straightforward and honest, conveying the emotions of the singer without any hesitation. The song begins with the singer calling out their lover's name, only to realize they are not there. They start to wonder if they were to blame for the breakup and why their lover left them. The singer then admits they can't sleep at night and that they're struggling to move on. However, they also say that they never weep at night, which seems to indicate that they're still holding onto their pain rather than letting it out. The song concludes with the singer calling their lover's name once again, illustrating that despite their struggles, they can't forget about them.

Overall, I Call Your Name is a powerful song that speaks to the universal experiences of heartbreak and loss. The Mamas & the Papas did an excellent job of capturing these emotions and expressing them in an accessible and relatable way. The song has a timeless quality to it, and it continues to resonate with audiences to this day.

Michelle wrote the 2nd verse of California Dream'n, by herself. When the song came out I totally identified with the song. I had a large paper route and froze my ass off in the winter on my bike. I brought my small transistor radio and listened to the song while freezing. Saw them for the first time on the Ed Sullivan Show. Loved them.

@Mary G Michelle Phillips is credited as co-writing four later The Mamas & The Papas songs, as well as writing all of three songs on her solo album, "Trashy Rumours," "There She Goes" and "Lady Of Fantasy." So it is not a fact that she never wrote a song.

@Kevin D You are really really PATHETIC.

@Mary G Wrong John was smart enough not to give 50% of the publishing fir her to jot down HIS words. MICHELLE wrote 100% of the Stopped into a church. The lyrics are exactly what they did before the song was even thought if. John said himself in an interview I saw the li tricks were a narrative of what was going on. The idea of the song was Muchelle bugging John about going back to Califirnia where she grew up and hated NY
John only decided to go to NY because him and the New Journeyman could get work on the east coast at colleges. Michelle put up with but then wanted leave NY. The idea of the song was born. I hot all tjisvinfo from John and Michelle in interviews that still exist today. This isnt my opinion but their words. All true except John claim he wrote ALL the lyrics. He didnt have the balls to give hisxex wife credit for Michelle's part.

Mary G

If Michelle had such a huge role in writing California Dreamin, her talent was astonishing. The fact that she never wrote another song indicates that this was not the case. John wrote tons of incredible songs, so his version seems more likely...

Thank you John for clearing that B S story up about Cass chocking on a ham sandwich this beautiful woman deserves way better than to be treated and lied about in her death she died because her heart stopped beating, REST IN PEACE BEAUTIFUL LADY MISS CASS ELLIOT.

MJ Remy

@Anna Z Of course you can. You eat yourself to death. Depression makes you hungry. If you eat a lot of carbs and sugar you will get fat fast. Add drugs and booze and its more sugar. At this point, your metabolism breaks down, but when you started you were fine. Its a mental problem, low grade depression, not enough Vit D3, potassium/magnesium to support the heart, deficiencies in Vit B1 Thiamine, and B Complex, and more. Drugs, caffeine are barriers to nutrient absorption. Add unhealthy food, late nights (low melatonin), binge dieting, high carb and sugar intake and you have a ticking time bomb that exploded predictably. You are what you eat, and you eat what you feel. Everyone starts out normal and they do this to themselves. Nothing is an accident. You get the fate you worked towards., As the Chinese say, 'Be careful what you wish for, because it will come true". I have zero sympathy for fat people. When I gain weight, I analyze what I am doing wrong and correct it. Fat people are self indulgent and lazy. Its hard work to stay slim and be disciplined about food and workouts but it is 100% attainable by anyone. Cass Elliott is no exception. Greedy, morbidly obese, lazy, and self indulgent. If you eat like a pig you remain fat as a pig. Did you ever see a fat horse? They exercise. Even wild pigs are lean and muscular. Its a matter of choice.

Anna Z

@MJ Remy your comment is very illogical...if your metabolism is fine, you can't gain as much weight.
