San Francisco
The Mamas & the Papas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I heard a story 'bout a sacred place
Where holy spirits get embraced
Supersonic place to go
(Where) Never born a sad end song

Long long way from home

With my soulmates (I) feel so down and insecure
In a world fallen far from grace
Gotta drop out and tune in and turn on
Will they ever feel this way?

The moment's come to show and tell
With all you used to know so well
Right here right now to testify
Right here right now to prove me right

To show you the way feel

With my soulmates (I) feel so down and insecure
In a world fallen far from grace
All the diamonds we got buried in our debris
(Are) longing for the great escape

[Guitar Solo]

With my soulmates (I) feel so down and insecure
In a world fallen far from grace
Gotta drop out and tune in and turn on
Will they ever feel this way?

With my soulmates (I) feel so down and insecure
In a world fallen far from grace
All the diamonds we got buried in our debris
(Are) longing for the great escape

With all our will we'll overcome spells of despair
Strike on them with the wall of sound right through the air

Reach out, dance on, verge of all out hell
Destination: salvation, mushroom trip to San Francisco

Overall Meaning

The Mamas & the Papas' "San Francisco" is an iconic song that has come to represent the Summer of Love and the hippie movement of the 1960s. The song's opening lines, "If you're going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair," have become part of the cultural lexicon and are still referenced today when discussing the era.

The song is an invitation to visit San Francisco, where you will find "gentle people with flowers in their hair" and a "love-in" during the summertime. The lyrics capture the feeling of the time, when young people were rejecting the values and conformity of mainstream society and seeking a new way of living that was more accepting, peaceful, and loving.

The song's chorus repeats the message to wear flowers in your hair if you go to San Francisco, emphasizing the importance of embracing the hippie lifestyle and the values of peace and love that it represented. The mention of "people in motion" and "a whole generation with a new explanation" reinforces the sense of change and momentum that was happening at the time.

The happy memories that this song and group bring back! I can remember playing out in the backyard with lightening bugs and neighbors BBQ nights when life was great. Todays songs are too violent and angry. Mammas and pappas is my favorite group god bless them and their souls may he know the happiness that they brought others.
