@Mic Ku I think People Like Us was done just to fulfill a contractual obligation. It's not horrible, but it's not good. Michelle has said that, by that point, they had nothing left to say.

The Turtles were terrific when they were The Crossfires a few years before..The voices of the Mamas & Papas were more beautiful and melodic for this song in my opinion.

The tempo on this version is slower. I think they were persuaded to record it because the songwrtiers were singed to Dunhill. I like them both, so I put them in my Turtles playlist. Thanks for the upload!

And I appreciate your tact, too, and thanks for sharing your thoughts! I really tried to like this song more and I DO like the vocals. I probably would have liked it more if the background instrumentation was stronger and more audible. But I enjoy hearing musical opinions on songs from people, regardless of whether I agree or disagree with them. I just HATE it, though, when people cuss at me when they disagree with me. Glad you are more respectful and polite than those folks. Rock on!

If you look at the writer credit on the label it says, (P .F Sloan and Steve Barri). These two were the surf group The Fantastic Baggys and wrote many songs for other artists. They also worked with Jan and Dean and sang backup on some of their hits.

Me, too; this was my favourite album as a kid. And this was one of my favourite cuts. I was surprised later on to learn that critics thought it the weakest cut on the album, saying it was all wrong for the M's & P's. I thought it was perfect for them, and that they did a great job. When I finally heard the original by the Turtles, I thought their version was lame. I especially love the riff just before they launch into the final chorus.

OK, Doug Celeste, I may have overstated it when I said the Turtles version was lame; theirs is actually quite good. But I still prefer the M's & P's. Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree; as you say so sensitively "to each their own." I certainly appreciate your tact.

At the risk of getting flambeed here, Denny's vocal sounds a lot like Jan and Dean, as in, they're singing with him. I'm sure The Ron Hicklin Singers were brought in for "support" on the group vocals in the left channel; maybe on the lead vocal as well.

This was not uncommon in Hollywood back then. If anyone knows for sure, please comment.

I agree with you 100%! The Turtles' version is the BEST since it not only has EXCELLENT vocals and harmonies but GREAT background instrumentation, something the Mamas and Papas' version sorely lacks which is unfortunate since their vocals are just fine. Their version of the song could have been MUCH better if it had much better background instrumentation which is hard to hear in the song. Now that was unusual for a Mamas and Papas song (and the group is one of my faves of the 1960's!).

This version is almost identical to that of The Vogues original 1965 version. Though The Vogues version was not officially released until 1996.

Of course, they probably just kept the original instrumental backing track and erased the vocal track by The Vogues and recorded a new vocal track by The Mama's and the Papa's.

Glad you like this song but the critics were right. This song could have been MUCH better if it had background instrumentation that you could hear. But I DID like the vocals of the Mamas and Papas in this tune, though. I have to disagree with you on the Turtles' version which was anything but "lame". The guys not only had EXCELLENT vocals and harmonies but SOLID background instrumentation and beat that you could hear well. The Turtles' version is the original and BEST but to each their own.

@Barbara Webb Nope. Weil & Mann (and Spector) did indeed write a song titled "You Baby" that The Ronettes recorded. But this song here by The Mamas & The Papas (first put out by The Turtles) was written by P.F. Sloan & Steve Barri. Two completely different songs.
