Jeannine
The Manhattan Transfer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Last time
Last time I saw Jeannine
She looked just like a royal queen
And she cruised by
With some wealthy guy
In a Cadillac limousine
Last time
Last time I saw Jeannine

Last time
Last time I saw Jeannine
Recall when we were seventeen
I was a beau
'Twas not so long ago
But too short
Of that long lost dream
To satisfy Jeannine

Now she's gone from me
Moved away from the old neighborhood
And I'm certain
She's gone for good

[Chorus:]
Last time
Last time I saw Jeannine
The dollar signs stood in between
It was a love lost to the rising cost
But since then, I have never seen
I have never seen Jeannine

Now she's gone from me
Moved away from the old neighborhood
And I'm certain
She's gone for good

[Chorus]

Last time
Last time I saw Jeannine
Last time
Last time I saw Jeannine

Hey cats - are you ready
Oh Jeannine (Jeannine)
Jeannine (Jeannine)

Last time

Last time I saw Jeannine
Last time I saw Jeannine

Overall Meaning

The Manhattan Transfer's song "Jeannine" tells the story of a lost love that the singer has not seen for a long time. The opening verse describes seeing Jeannine with a wealthy man in a Cadillac limousine, emphasizing the contrast between their current lives. The second verse reflects on their teenage years and the singer's unsuccessful attempts to win Jeannine's love. The chorus repeats the phrase "last time I saw Jeannine," underscoring the finality of their separation.

Despite the upbeat tempo and playful scatting that occur throughout the song, the lyrics suggest a sense of wistfulness and regret. The opening line of the chorus, "the dollar signs stood in between," suggests that financial considerations played a role in their breakup. The repeated phrase "last time" highlights the melancholy fact that the singer believes he will never see Jeannine again. The final lines of the song repeat the refrain "last time I saw Jeannine," imbuing the listener with a sense of nostalgia for a bygone love.

lot of groups come and go but there will never be anything like these four acapella geniuses.... Sorry, just my opinion and I love this group and have followed them ever since their inception..... RIP TIM HAUSER!

Michael Chapman

I caught them one evening at LA's Greek Theatre, one of the best concerts I've ever been to & at the finale They did several encores .....

It is your opinion and you are entitled to it. You just happen to be 100% right.

Wonderful, wonderful wonderful! Watching these 4 great singers working out their vocal arrangement and approach! Thank you for sharing! Need more!!!

wkbbrat

This is so special ! To get to hear them rehearse their parts shows the complexity of what they’re doing musically , and the difficulty of singing 4 part harmony!!! Renewed my love & respect for this group 👍🏾😍❤️!

Wolfsky9

The concentration, & sheer professionalism it takes to pull off this number, is mind boggling.

Wolfsky9

4 of THE best, to ever come together in vocal harmony. Each has talent & both women have carved out single careers along with TMT, & that's been a huge reason why they stayed together for so very long. --------------RIP, Tim Hauser.

italian guy

I had a group that tried to be like them and we rehearsed constantly, like this. It was brutal, very difficult and hell to keep the group together. It takes such an incredible and special group of people to stay together for the many years TMT has! I'm glad they did, I love them!

Paul Thompson

This is literally how u do harmonies so perfectly and on key......I’ve been doing it this way since I was a kid......all thanks to Manhattan Transfer 🔥❤️

Tommy Marcinek
