From the bands Myspace:
By mid 1978 The Scavengers were banned from playing anywhere in New Zealand and decided to go to Ronnie's homeland ie: Mother England.
Short on airfares for that distance they only made it as far as Australia... AND a name change to MARCHING GIRLS... this was version 1.
In 1981 a single TRUE LOVE / FIRST IN LINE was released on Au go go in Australia, Propellor in NZ and Pop Aural in the UK.
By this time Ronnie had had enough and left the band to form Dead Can Dance.
VERSION 2 came about a year or so later when Management asked Des and Johnny to reform the band for a tour of NZ
Much auditioning later Bryan Colechin and Debbie Schultze joined. Bryan was from Christchurch bands Bon Marche and The News. Debbie, also a New Zealander had been in Sydney band Blue Electric.
This version recorded a 12" EP for Virgin NZ. Plain Jane / My Friends / The Introduction / Flesh Lies
In 1984 'Plain Jane' was re-recorded for EMI and released as a single with 'The man who knew too much' from a previous demo.
Debbie had given birth to a son by the time it was released and quit the band
Around this time there was a lot of changes going on which lead to VERSION 3
The final line up was Des, Johnny, Paula Sheldrake, Matthew Heydon and Paul Erikson.
Paul had played with DEAD CAN DANCE. Paula had no previous musical history.
A millionaire with a recording studio in the south of France wanted to record the band after hearing a demo of new songs that Johnny, Des, Matt and Paula had made in a bedroom and so off they went
It didn't turn out the way it was hoped but 2 songs, SAFE AS HOUSES / PARADISE were partially re-recorded and remixed for release by POLYGRAM in 1987.
MARCHING GIRLS dissolved shortly after.
True Love
The Marching Girls Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
All the words float in sequence
No one knows what they mean
Everyone just ignores them
The opening lines of the song "True Love" by The Marching Girls are poetic in nature, as they describe an abstract concept using vivid imagery. The metaphor of clouds turning to words brings to mind the idea of thoughts or emotions becoming tangible, while the words floating in sequence suggest an ordered pattern of communication. However, the subsequent line "No one knows what they mean" suggests that despite the apparent order, these words lack coherence, and their intended message remains unclear. The final line "Everyone just ignores them" implies that the message conveyed by these words is not considered important by those who hear them.
The lyrics of "True Love" continue this theme, exploring the complexities of communication in relationships. The chorus contains the lines "True love's not hard to find, it's just impossible to recognise". This suggests that while true love may exist, it is often difficult to recognize, due to the inherent confusion in human communication. The song seems to suggest that true love is intangible, existing beyond the limits of language and expression.
