The Sun
The Maroon 5 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

After school
Walking home
Fresh dirt under my fingernails
And I can smell hot asphalt
Cars screech to a halt to let me pass
And I cannot remember
What life was like through photographs
And trying to recreate images life gives us from our past

And sometimes it's a sad song

But I cannot forget
Refuse to regret
So glad I met you and
Take my breath away
Make every day
Worth all of the pain that I have gone through
And Mama I've been cryin'
'Cause things ain't how they used to be
She said, "The battle's almost won
And we're only several miles from the sun"

Oh whoa, yeah

Now, moving on down my street
I see people I won't ever meet
I think of her and take a breath
Feel the beat in the rhythm of my steps

And sometimes it's a sad song

But I cannot forget
Refuse to regret
So glad I met you and
Take my breath away
Make every day
Worth all of the pain that I have gone through
And Mama I've been cryin'
'Cause things ain't how they used to be
She said, "The battle's almost won
And we're only several miles from the sun"

The rhythm of her conversation
The perfection of her creation
The sex she slipped into my coffee
The way she felt when she first saw me
Hate to love and love to hate her
Like a broken record player
Back and forth and here and gone
And on and on and on and on

I cannot forget
Refuse to regret
So glad I met you and
Take my breath away
Make every day
Worth all of the pain that I have gone through
And Mama I've been cryin'
'Cause things ain't how they used to be
She said, "The battle's almost won
And we're only several miles
Said, the battle's almost won
And we're only several miles from the sun"

Yeah, oh, several miles from the sun, oh
Yeah, yeah, whoo whoa, whoa, yeah, yeah

Overall Meaning

The song "The Sun" by Maroon 5 is about the journey of the singer from his childhood to adulthood. The opening lyrics tell us about his childhood days walking back home from school with dirt under his fingernails and the smell of hot asphalt filling the air. He cannot remember what his life was like through photographs, but he is trying to recapture the images in his life. He is sad at times but he does not want to regret anything. He's glad that he met someone special who takes his breath away and brightens his life. Even though he's going through pain, he finds everyday worth living.

As he walks down the street, he sees people he will never meet and takes a breath while feeling the rhythm of his steps. He thinks of this person who fills his life with love and passion. He loves and hates her like a broken record player going back and forth. The singer knows he cannot forget the person he met, refuses to regret his love and is glad he met her. He is crying because things are not the same as they used to be. His mother tells him that they are only several miles from the sun, implying that his life is about to get brighter, and he is closer to achieving his goal.

I argue with my girlfriend a couple times a year about how much better Maroon 5 used to be. She’s is a little younger and didn’t start with Songs About Jane. BY FAR this bands best album

@DeclanBurger

Back when Maroon 5 was a band that wrote their own songs, and hadn’t sold out to the corporate music world and had a light fusion jazzy vibe. Bizarre and amazing. They’ve changed a lot.

@Leefonzell

I was literally just saying this. I love how many people view this album the same way I do.

@utubedestroysmytime

This drummer was bad ass. This album was so organic and so much more about good musicianship.

@williefaulker

Yep he was , he left the group right before their second album I believe
