Known for their energetic live shows and concept albums, The Mars Volta formed following the break-up of Rodríguez-López and Bixler-Zavala's previous band, At the Drive-In. Seeking to experiment and expand their sound, Rodríguez-López and Bixler-Zavala recruited Gardner, Isaiah "Ikey" Owens (keyboards), Jon Theodore (drums) and Jeremy Ward (sound manipulation) to form The Mars Volta. The band released their debut EP, Tremulant, in 2002, with Gardner leaving the band prior to recording their debut album, De-Loused in the Comatorium. She was replaced by Red Hot Chili Peppers bass guitarist Flea for the sessions. The Rick Rubin-produced album received widespread critical acclaim upon its release in 2003.
The band's second studio album, Frances the Mute (2005), was self-produced by Rodríguez-López and was the first to feature longterm members Juan Alderete (bass) and Marcel Rodríguez-López. The album debuted at #4 on the US Billboard 200 and became the band's biggest commercial success, selling over 500,000 copies in the US and achieving Gold certification from the RIAA. The band's third studio album, Amputechture, was released in 2006 and was the last album to feature Theodore. In 2008, the band released The Bedlam in Goliath, a concept album inspired by the band's turbulent experiences with a ouija-type talking board. The album's first single, "Wax Simulacra" was awarded a Grammy Award in 2009 for Best Hard Rock Performance. The band released its fifth album, Octahedron, in June 2009.
Following the release of their sixth album, Noctourniquet (2012), and a run of reunion shows with At the Drive-In, The Mars Volta entered a hiatus in September 2012. Rodríguez-López subsequently formed a new project, Bosnian Rainbows, and the band formally broke up after disagreements between Rodríguez-López and Bixler-Zavala. The duo repaired their friendship and reunited in 2014 for a new project, Antemasque, and further At the Drive-In tours and recording sessions.
Reuniting in secret in 2019, Rodríguez-López and Bixler-Zavala recorded a new studio album, The Mars Volta, with Gardner, Marcel Rodríguez-López and drummer Willy Rodriguez Quiñones. The band announced their reunion – after ten years of public inactivity – with an art installation called L'ytome Hodorxí Telesterion, in June 2022. For the band's live return, jazz pianist Leo Genovese and drummer Linda-Philomène Tsoungui were added to the line-up.

Hija de Miranda
Tu Apellido se cambió
L'Via
Sin ojos me quieres dar
Una historia sin mi madre
Sólo tengo que decirte
El dolor de noche dice
Le lavé la sangre, oh
Oh-oh, oh-oh
Oh-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah
L'Via
No dejes de descansar
En la calle caminas
¿Quién te va a perseguir?
L'Via
Te quieren matar
Mientes en Machete
Cabeza de gallo
L'Via
Durmiendo en paz
Abre los ojos
Todo cambiará
L'Via
Sonando de venganza
Yo te lo juro
Lo van a pagar
Oh-oh, oh-oh
Oh-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah
Blackmailed, she fell off every mountain
The ones they tightly wrapped in tape
In her eraser sang the guilty
As it made the best mistakes
And with everybody that I find
And with every claymore that they mine
I won't forget who I'm looking for
Oh mother help me I'm looking for
L'Via
Hija de Miranda
Tu apellido se cambió
L'Via
Sin ojos me quieres dar
Una historia sin mi madre
Sólo tengo que decirte
El volor de noche dice
Sólo se quedo el vestido
Le lavé la sangre
Oh-oh, oh-oh
Oh-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah
Blackmailed, she fell off every mountain
The ones they tightly wrapped in tape
In her eraser sang the guilty
As it made the best mistakes
And with everybody that I find
And with every claymore that they mine
I won't forget who I'm looking for
Oh mother help me I'm looking for
Sólo tengo
Una hora
Y me duermo
Terminado
Por veinticinco
Años pasaron
Siguen los cuerpos
Aquí temblando
Tomé la sangre
Comí el cuerpo
Mis lágrimas
Quiebra un espejo
When all the worms come
Crawling out your head
Telling you
Don't you be afraid
When all the worms come
Crawling out your head (oh-oh, oh-oh)
Telling you
Don't you be afraid (oh-oh, oh-oh)
Oh-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah

Blackmailed she fell off every mountain
The ones they tightly wrapped in tape
In her eraser sang the guilty
As it made the best mistakes
Shark kites got tangled in the moleskin
Urgent plea of escape
A mouth to mouth on the chalkboard
Written in fingernail distaste
And with everybody that I find
And with every claymore that they mine
I won't forget who I'm looking for
Oh mother help me I'm looking for
Blackmailed she fell off every mountain
The ones they tightly wrapped in tape
In her eraser sang the guilty

The song "L'Via L'Viaquez" by The Mars Volta is a powerful and emotional song that tells the story of L'Via, a woman whose mother was taken from her. The first verse explains that L'Via's last name has been changed and that she intends to give a story without her mother. The second verse speaks to L'Via's fear and the possibility that someone wants to kill her. The chorus reassures L'Via that things will change and offers her hope of revenge.
The song continues with verses that speak to L'Via's pain and the longing for her mother. The bridge speaks to a moment of desperation as the singer reflects on taking the blood and body of their fallen victim. The lyrics of the bridge are juxtaposed with a chorus that speaks to hope in the face of despair. The song concludes with a repetition of the chorus.
Overall, "L'Via L'Viaquez" is a song that deals with themes of loss, grief, and ultimately revenge. The Mars Volta's powerful delivery of the lyrics to the intense and haunting instrumentation creates an emotional and impactful piece of music.

I find Cedric's voice one of the most mesmerizing and powerful male voices in rock. I also love his humble affect in interviews. This band's eclectic creativity is astounding.
