Things Behind the Sun
The Mars Volta Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Please beware of them that stare
They'll only smile to see you while
Your time away
And once you've seen what they have been
To win the earth just won't seem worth
Your night or your day
Who'll hear what I say.
Look around you find the ground
Is not so far from where you are
Don't too wise
For down below they never grow
They're always tired and charms are hired
From out of their eyes
Never surprise.

Take your time and you'll be fine
And say a prayer for people there
Who live on the floor
And if you see what's meant to be
Don't name the day or try to say
It happened before.

Don't be shy you learn to fly
And see the sun when day is done
If only you see
Just what you are beneath a star
That came to stay one rainy day
In autumn for free
Yes, be what you'll be.
Please beware of them that stare
They'll only smile to see you while
Your time away
And once you've seen what they have been
To win the earth just won't seem worth
Your night or your day
Who'll hear what I say.

Open up the broken cup
Let goodly sin and sunshine in
Yes that's today.
And open wide the hymns you hide
You find reknown while people frown
At things that you say
But say what you'll say
About the farmers and the fun
And the things behind the sun
And the people round your head
Who say everything's been said

And the movement in your brain
Sends you out into the rain.

Overall Meaning

The Mars Volta's interpretation of Nick Drake's Things Behind the Sun is an exalting song that encourages listeners to not let society's rigid expectations constrain them. The song begins by warning listeners to be cautious of those who try to waste their time, only to later reveal that societal norms are the time-suckers. The main reason for this is that society imposes certain values on individuals that make life seem draining, hence why the chorus proclaims that 'to win the earth just won't seem worth your night or your day.' This chorus is an incredible statement on how numbing societal expectations can make life feel meaningless. The song acknowledges the importance of taking it slow and praying for those who have been shunned in life, as opposed to trying to always fit in and follow societal norms.

Things Behind the Sun has had a lasting impact as it was covered by several talented artists, most notably Thom Yorke of Radiohead. The song's message resonates with listeners who are tired of the monotony and are searching for meaning. It also showcases The Mars Volta's versatile musical style, as they blended psychedelic rock with Drake's original folk sound, to create a hypnotic melody that draws listeners in.

This version is so strange-beautiful. They found a way to remain original even as they, basically, do the same song, same guitar . This one grows on me slowly..

CANIMALEDETTI

My respect to The Mars Volta for covering such a tremendous forgotten poet.

Christian Braxton

@Nuno Martins What so he can't talk now because of his dentures? Some of us just know his voice man but you go right ahead relating everything about him back to his drug abuse in the 1990s if that makes you feel better. Nearly got through one small comment section without someone feeling the need to bring that up but no.

Nuno Martins

unfortunately that pretty much happens cause he has no teeth of his own due to drug abuse
