Compared to Southern rock pioneers and label-mates The Allman Brothers Band, Marshall Tucker had a more country and western feel, with the flute being a key lead instrument in their sound. "Can't You See", "Fire on the Mountain", and "This Ol' Cowboy" are among their songs that received appreciable FM radio airplay, while "Heard It in a Love Song" made it to #14 as a single on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977.
Original bassist Tommy Caldwell died in a car crash on April 28, 1980. His brother, guitarist Toy Caldwell, died of respiratory failure on February 25, 1993.
There was no band member named "Marshall Tucker". Originally, the band called itself The Toy Factory (named after lead-guitarist Toy Caldwell). But by the time the band released its first album they had become the Marshall Tucker Band. During a radio interview in Hempstead, NY in 1973, Tommy Caldwell explained the origins of the band's name:
"There's an old blind dude [in Spartanburg, SC] that tunes pianos, and his name is Marshall Tucker... We didn't name the band after him, but we just kind of liked that name and stuck with it."

I got some time to kill
I got some sunshine in a blue on blue sky
I got some bad news on my radio
I gotta jam in the south town
We go pick up an old girlfriend
And see can we leave all this behind
'Cause I'm an anyway the wind blows rider
With a dream like the river getting wider
Yes, I'm love lost
And I'm good times and bad gone by
I think I'll go down by the river
It never fails to deliver
That feeling of peace
I can't seem to find in the city
'Cause I'm an anyway the wind blows rider
With a dream like the river getting wider
Oh, I'm sunshine and I'm a blue on blue sky
I'm a line from a low zone
I'm a scene from a faded dream
'Cause I'm an anyway the wind blows rider
With a dream like the river getting wider
Yeah, I'm sunshine and I'm blue on blue sky
'Cause I'm an anyway the wind blows rider
With a dream like the river getting wider
Yeah, I'm love lost
And I'm good times and bad gone by
'Cause I'm an anyway the wind blows rider
With a dream like the river getting wider
The lyrics to The Marshall Tucker Band's song 'Anyway the Wind Blows Rider' speaks about a person who is experiencing different emotions and situations in life. The person has some money, time, and sunshine but also hears some bad news on the radio. They have to go to the south town to pick up an old girlfriend and leave all the troubles behind. The person considers themselves an 'anyway the wind blows rider' with a dream of the river getting wider. They are love lost, and at the same time, they have experienced good and bad times.
The person then decides to go down by the river to find peace, which they cannot find in the city. They consider themselves a line from a low zone and a scene from a faded dream. The person believes that they are an 'anyway the wind blows rider' with a dream of a river getting wider, sunshine, and blue-on-blue sky.
The lyrics of the song suggest that the person is going through a time of transition in their life. The song speaks to the human experience of encountering highs and lows in life and finding a way to navigate through them. The line 'Anyway the Wind Blows Rider' implies that the person is flexible and adaptable to changes, and they are willing to move forward in life, no matter which direction the wind blows.
