Compared to Southern rock pioneers and label-mates The Allman Brothers Band, Marshall Tucker had a more country and western feel, with the flute being a key lead instrument in their sound. "Can't You See", "Fire on the Mountain", and "This Ol' Cowboy" are among their songs that received appreciable FM radio airplay, while "Heard It in a Love Song" made it to #14 as a single on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977.
Original bassist Tommy Caldwell died in a car crash on April 28, 1980. His brother, guitarist Toy Caldwell, died of respiratory failure on February 25, 1993.
There was no band member named "Marshall Tucker". Originally, the band called itself The Toy Factory (named after lead-guitarist Toy Caldwell). But by the time the band released its first album they had become the Marshall Tucker Band. During a radio interview in Hempstead, NY in 1973, Tommy Caldwell explained the origins of the band's name:
"There's an old blind dude [in Spartanburg, SC] that tunes pianos, and his name is Marshall Tucker... We didn't name the band after him, but we just kind of liked that name and stuck with it."

And I was tought to judge men equal and not to find their faults
Until one day I witnessed a tragic thing
The men lay on the church steps, slain
And when the smoke cleared a tall man holstered his gun
The bright day ended and a cloud did cover the sun
I found hate in my heart that I'd never known before
I'll see this man hang and if that's the one thing that I know for sure
Silverado you'll hang by the hangman's tree
And you'll die in misery
His face remained in my eyes as I grew through the years
I practiced shooting every day while trying to hold back the tears
I travelled through Oklahoma and Texas to the Rio Grande
Knowing when I met Silverado the Lord would steady my hand
Silverado you'll hang by the hangman's tree
And you'll die in misery
Then the day came I dreamed of for years
Silverado stood before me and my heart it pounded in fear
As he turned and saw my eyes he knew why I'd come
And without a flick of the eyes he went for his gun
And as I caused a fight tears come to my eyes
When he collapsed before me I dropped my gun an sighed
Silverado you'll hang by the hangman's tree
And you'll die in misery
The Marshall Tucker Band's song "Silverado" tells a story of a young man's journey towards seeking revenge against a man named Silverado who was responsible for the slaughter of men in his church. The song is a commentary on the thematic tensions between the virtues of forgiveness and pursuing justice. The singer of the song was brought up with Christian values that teach him to look beyond peoples' flaws and be forgiving. However, upon witnessing the killings of men he knew and his sense of justice and anger overlap his Christian teaching, and he decides he will find and kill the man responsible for the deaths.
The singer's hatred did nothing but increase as he traveled through different states in his search for the man responsible. When the day finally comes to confront Silverado, the singer tries to hold back his tears while also trying to steady his hand for what he had decided to do. In the end, the confrontation does not go exactly as expected, and the singer ends up feeling overwhelmed by emotions, even dropping his own gun. The song ends with "Silverado you'll hang by the hangman's tree, and you'll die in misery." This phrase suggests that the singer indeed got his chance to kill Silverado even though it cost him a part of himself he can never get back.
