Blue Moon
The Mavericks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blue moon you saw me standing alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own
Blue moon, you knew just what I was there for
You heard me saying a prayer for
Someone I really could care for
And then there suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms will ever hold
I heard somebody whisper "Please adore me"
And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold!
Blue moon!
Now I'm no longer alone

Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own

Overall Meaning

The Mavericks' song "Blue Moon," which was originally written in 1934 by composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Lorenz Hart, is a song about finding love in a hopeless situation. The song starts with the singer standing alone, under the blue moon, without any dreams or love in his heart. He is not happy with his current situation and is praying to find someone to care for while under the blue moon. Suddenly, someone appears before him, and he feels that she is the only one he will ever hold. The moon then turns to gold, signifying that his dream has finally come true. The song ends with the singer noting that he is no longer alone and that he finally has his dream and love in his heart.

The singer in The Mavericks' version of "Blue Moon" adds an interesting twist to the original song's interpretation. The song's music is upbeat, happy, and upbeat, contrasting with the message conveyed in the lyrics. The singer in the song is still feeling alone and without any love, but he's had a change of heart. The song signifies that despite a bleak situation, something can change, and love can suddenly appear out of nowhere. The upbeat tone and rhythm of the song suggest that his dreams of love and companionship have finally come true.

"Blue Moon" is a classic popular song written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart in 1934. This may be the first instance of the familiar "50s progression" in a popular song, and it has become a standard ballad. Early recordings included those by Connee Boswell and by Al Bowlly in 1935. The song was a hit twice in 1949, with successful recordings in the U.S. by Billy Eckstine and Mel Tormé.
In 1961, "Blue Moon" became an international number-one hit for the doo-wop group The Marcels, on the Billboard 100 chart and in the UK Singles Chart, and later that same year, an instrumental version by The Ventures charted at #54. Over the years, "Blue Moon" has been covered by many artists, including versions by Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Stevens, Billie Holiday, AmĂĄlia Rodrigues, Elvis Presley, Bobby Vinton, Sam Cooke, The Platters, The Mavericks, Dean Martin, Yvonne De Carlo, The Supremes, Cyndi Lauper, New Edition, Bob Dylan, Chromatics, and Rod Stewart. Bing Crosby included the song in a medley on his album On the Happy Side (1962). The Cowboy Junkies recorded the song on their album
