From Hell To Paradise
The Mavericks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

For thirty years they sang the song of promised victory
But who they've fought and who has won
Didn't matter much to me
I see them driving down the streets
In their fancy shiny cars
Crowds of people to their feet
Their faces full of scars
No pleasantries, no luxuries
No little children's mild
While minister's wives spent all their lives
In China's finest silk
My back's been broken many times
But my spirit lingers on
The day it comes my way on freedom's ship
I will be gone

From hell to paradise
I'll always pay the price
From hell to paradise
I'll always pay the price

This ninety mile trip has taken thirty years to make
They tried to keep forever what was never theirs to take
I cursed and scratched the Devil's hand
As he stood in front of me
One last drag for his big cigar
And he finally set me free

From hell to paradise
I'll always pay the price
From hell to paradise
I'll always pay the price

From hell to paradise
I'll always pay the price
From hell to paradise
I'll always pay the price

Con ojos tiernos algun dia te mirare

Con brasos abiertos algun dia abrasare
Hay me havana cuando pueda regresare

Overall Meaning

The Mavericks' song "From Hell to Paradise" tells the story of a person who has lived through the struggles of war and has seen the devastation it causes. The first stanza speaks of the promises of victory that were made for thirty years, but the person singing the song realizes that it does not matter who won or who lost, war always leaves scars. The image of stark contrast follows as the wealthy drive by in their fancy cars while children without luxuries watch. It highlights the inequality and disparity that exists between the rich and poor during times of war.

The second stanza is filled with personal pain and suffering. The singer's back has been broken many times, but their spirit still lingers on with the hope of one day reaching freedom. The lyrics suggest that perhaps the singer is a prisoner of war or someone living in an oppressed society. As the song continues, the person singing it refers to a ninety-mile trip that has taken thirty years to make. The devil himself is standing in front of the singer, causing him or her to scratch his hand and curse. It's a visual representation of the internal struggle that takes place when living through the atrocities of war.

Finally, the chorus repeats the phrase "From hell to paradise, I'll always pay the price." It's a powerful statement about the cost of freedom and the price one pays for it. The last lines of the song are in Spanish and translate to "With tender eyes, someday I will look at you, with open arms, someday I will embrace you. Havana, take me there when I can return." It's a poignant reminder that even though the singer may have left behind the hell they once knew, their past will always stay with them.

+TanzDerSchatten

That's b/c they are NOT really Country.

"Music" does not quite know where to place them -- the band is so versatile -- so they just threw a dart and it landed on Country.
