Wild Mountain Thyme
The McCalmans Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, the summer time is coming
And the trees are sweetly blooming
And the wild mountain thyme
O'er the moorland is perfuming
Will ye go, lassie, go?

And we'll all go together
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather
Will ye go, lassie, go?

I will build my love a bower
By yon cool and crystal fountain
And round it I will pile
All the flowers of the mountain
Will ye go, lassie, go?

And we'll all go together
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather
Will ye go, lassie, go?

If my true love she were gone
I would surely find another
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather
Will ye go, lassie, go?

And we'll all go together
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather

Will ye go, lassie, go?
Will ye go, lassie, go?

Overall Meaning

The McCalmans' song 'Wild Mountain Thyme' sings about the beauty of summer as signaled by sweet-smelling trees, blooming heather and fragrant wild thyme perfuming the moorland. The singer invites his lassie to go with him and his friends to pull wild mountain thyme all around the heather. The chorus sounds joyful and inviting with the singer inviting his lassie over and over again to join them in this adventure. He promises to build a bower for his love by a cool and crystal fountain and pile all the flowers of the mountain round it.

The second verse also plays out the same situation where the singer pleads for his love to join him to pull wild mountain thyme if she were gone. He proposes to find another if she leaves, and they will all go together to pull wild mountain thyme all around the blooming heather. The song is generally interpreted to be about love, nature and freedom. Wild mountain thyme is a herb, also called thymus serphyllum or creeping thyme, that grows in the wild in the mountains of Scotland, England and Ireland. The song (also known as Purple Heather or Go Lassie Go) is a Scottish folksong, and there are different versions of it.
