Something
The McGuire Sisters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give

When an irresistible force such as you
Meets and old immovable object like me
You can bet as sure as you live
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give

When an irrepressible smile such as yours
Warms an old implacable heart such as mine
Don't say no because I insist
Somewhere, somehow
Someone's gonna be kissed

So en garde who knows what the fates have in store
From their vast mysterious sky
I'll try hard ignoring those lips I adore
But how long can anyone try

Fight, fight, fight
Fight, fight it with all of our might
Chances are some heavenly star spangled night
We'll find out as sure as we live
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give

Fight, fight, fight it with all of our might
Chances are some heavenly star spangled night
We'll find out as sure as we live
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give

Something's gotta
Something's gotta give

Overall Meaning

The McGuire Sisters's song "Something's Gotta Give" is a tune about the inevitability of love. The song's lyrics describe a situation where two people who seem to be incompatible in every way imaginable because of their age differences and personalities find themselves being attracted to each other. The phrase "Something's gotta give" is repeated throughout the song and implies that change is necessary for the relationship to work.

The first verse introduces the two opposing forces, the irresistible and the immovable. The singer in the song seems to be a stubborn individual who has lived life on their terms, but is now attracted to someone who is young and energetic. The second verse describes the situation in more detail, as the singer realizes that they cannot resist the charming smile and the warm heart of their newfound love.

The song's chorus repeats the phrase "Something's gotta give" several times, implying that change is needed for the relationship to work. The singer then goes on to encourage their love interest to take a chance, insisting that if they do, they will find that something good will come of it.

In summary, "Something's Gotta Give" is a song about the power of love to overcome differences and barriers. The lyrics suggest that sometimes, in order to be happy, we must take risks and make changes in ourselves and our lives.
