The Menzingers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Swinging and swaying to the murder mystery
Rhyme and reason fled the crime scene
Of new penthouses next to tents in the streets
Courtesy of the land of the free
Well George Floyd was murdered by a cop
Now justice is long over due
Grab your pitchforks we're heading to Pennsylvania Avenue
'Cause enough is enough, is enough
I hope the Devil and Donald
And Mitch McConnell
Rot in hell for all tomorrow's
To sing along's of siren songs
To oohs, to ahs, to big applause
With all of my anger, I scream and shout
America I love you but you're freaking me out
Well the president gassed protesters
For a photo op in front of a church
He waved a Bible all around
Said "Come on God, even you better fear me now"
Oh but God's gonna have the last laugh
'Cause all of your money, and all of your power
Won't mean much in your final hour
To sing along's of siren songs
To oohs, to ahs, to big applause
With all of my anger, I scream and shout
America I love you but you're freaking me out
America I love you but you're freaking me out
America I love you but you're freaking me out
The Menzingers’ song “America” is a powerful commentary on the state of the country and the world at large. The opening lines of the song paint an image of a desolate society that has lost its way. The “lonely end of history” suggests that we are at a turning point in our culture where the future is uncertain. The “murder mystery” that the singer is swinging and swaying to could represent the political climate of the country, which has become increasingly violent and divisive. The following lines describe the stark contrast between the wealthy penthouses and the struggling tent communities of the streets, showing the stark inequality in America.
The song then directly references the murder of George Floyd by a police officer, highlighting the injustice and brutality that plagues American society. The call to action to “grab your pitchforks” and head to Pennsylvania Avenue is a clear statement that enough is enough, and change is desperately needed. The next verse targets corrupt politicians such as Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell, saying they will “rot in hell” for their actions. The final lines of the song offer a glimpse of hope, as the singer looks towards a future where the power of money and politics is no longer relevant, and God will have the final say.

Oh, how do I steer my early 30's
Before I shipwreck, before im 40
Oh, ain't it a shame what we choose to ignore
What kind of monsters did our parents vote for?
Lately I feel like I'm in puppet Vichy France
Tryin' to teach the devil how to dance
To these sing-alongs of siren songs
To ooh's to ahh's
To big applause
With all of my anger I scream and shout
America, I love you but you're freaking me out
Ooh-oh-oh-oh
Ooh-oh-oh-oh
Ooh-oh-oh-oh
Ooh-oh-oh-oh
Driving through the Bible Belt
Billboards claiming how Jesus felt
Oh, how'd his words confuse themselves?
With cranks for christians in powerful positions
I've always felt like all their pomp and circumstance
Is just cover for the devil to dance
To these sing-alongs of siren songs
To ooh's to ahh's
To big applause
With all of my anger I scream and shout
America, I love you but you're freaking me out
America, you're freaking me out
With all my anger I shout
Can't you recognize truth from clever lies?
To these sing-alongs of siren songs

To big applause
With all of my anger I scream and shout
America, I love you but you're freaking me out
