Bad Things
The Menzingers Lyrics

Driving there's no steering wheel
No doors I can't see out
Kicking and screaming on the motorway
The radio static screams my name
Water is coming up faster and faster
Can't move my arms, they've been casted in plaster
The radio static repeats my name
Paranoid, I'm paranoid, I'm paranoid
Where did this gun come from?
Don't wait up for me my friend
I'm planning to watch the world burn
Don't wait up for me my friend
I'm planning to watch the world burn down
All your friends are dead and gone
Dreaming that our teeth are torn out
Driving there's no steering wheel
No doors I can't get out
Metal and plastic on the motorway
The radio static forgot our name
I'm gonna do it
I'm gonna do it this time, pull it this time
The lyrics of “Bad Things” by The Menzingers, reveals the inner turmoil of an individual who feels overwhelmed by life's circumstances. In the opening lines, the songwriter speaks about a dream where his teeth are falling out, which is often symbolic of feeling powerless and losing control. The subsequent lines suggest that the individual is driving without a steering wheel, which could symbolize a lack of direction or a feeling of being lost. The sensory deprivation of having no doors and the inability to see out would obviously increase this sense of disorientation.
As the song progresses, the imagery becomes increasingly violent and disturbing. The individual is bleeding on the motorway, and water is coming up faster and faster as if he is drowning. He also cannot move his arms, which symbolizes a feeling of being trapped or constrained. The radio static screaming his name symbolizes the overwhelming nature of his thoughts and feelings. The line "Paranoid, I'm paranoid, I'm paranoid, where did this gun come from?" is particularly haunting as it suggests that the individual is not only tormented by his thoughts but may also be contemplating suicide.
Throughout the song, the individual is telling his friend not to wait up for him as he is planning to watch the world burn. This line could refer to the individual wanting to witness the destruction of everything around him, or it could also be interpreted as him wanting to burn his own life down. In the end, the song speaks about the dream of having teeth torn out shared by "our" narrator, giving us a sense that the feelings and struggles portrayed in the lyrics are universal and experienced by many.
