You Came
The Merry Thoughts Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You came in the icarus season
You came with metal and steel
You came, not by chance
And not by reason
You came in a world unstilled
Then the lights went out
Still the fragments shout
I found and lost what I adored
I tasted strength and wanted more
I knew the rules of every game
Since your body, since you came
I found and lost what I adored
And lost my loss again

You came in the icarus season
You came with powdered hands
I turned I turned I turned
I had some reason
I turned you couldn't understand
Oh, you can make belief
It' sure we never leave

I found and lost what I adored
I tasted strength and wanted more
I knew the rules of every game
Since your body, since you came
I found and lost what I adored
And lost my loss again

You bought yourself a life, cod
And the screen allows you what a man,
What a man can be

You came in the icarus season
You came with metal and steel
You came, not by chance
And not by reason
You came in a world unstilled
Then the lights went out
Still the fragments shout

I found and lost what I adored
I tasted strength and wanted more
I knew the rules of every game
Since your body, since you came

I found and lost what I adored
And lost my loss again

Overall Meaning

The Merry Thoughts' "You Came" is a dramatic and enigmatic song with lyrics that can be open to interpretation. The song starts with a reference to the Icarus myth, which tells the story of a man who tried to fly too close to the sun with wings made of wax and feathers, only to fall to his death. In the song, the reference to Icarus season may suggest a time of peril or recklessness. The lyrics suggest that the arrival of a person, likely a lover or a muse, brought a sudden desire for something more, a need to take risks and go beyond the limits.

The lyrics also hint at a power dynamic between the singer and the person who came into their life. The lines "You came with metal and steel" and "You bought yourself a life, cod" suggest that the person has a hardened, almost robotic personality, while the singer is drawn to their strength and personality. The lyrics also express a sense of loss and longing, with the singer admitting to finding and losing what they adored.

Overall, the song suggests a complex relationship that brings both exhilaration and pain. The singer seems to be struggling with their own emotions, trying to grapple with the intensity of their feelings for the other person.

grat song - great debut album. I was lucky enough to see these guys play live. They were very under-rated.

Frank Tielemans

True, I also have seen them once in Belgium, they were very good live.
His singing was way better than Eldritch.

Arlaune

One amongst my favourite bands ever....

These guys didn't consider them to be Goth.  The band describes their music as 'counter pop', but  The Merry Thoughts are often considered to be a gothic-rock band, because of their great success in the 90s gothic-rock scene.

lisa thomas

love this band

It's fine to believe sometimes to YT they offer a great song :) Thanks for this, never heard of The Merry Thoughts. At the first moment I thought it's Andrew Eldritch and some material I don't know :) Great song, thanks for sharing.

I wished these guys were still a band and making music.

Marc Hoyland

We (13 Candles) played with these guys years ago.. They did a great version of the madonna track Frozen.... Very good band live....
