Wild Rover
The Merry Wives of Windsor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been a wild rover for many a year,
And I've spent all me money on whiskey and beer (oops!)
But now I'm returning with gold in great store,
And I never will play the wild rover no more

And it's no, nay, never! (Bum bum bum bum)
No nay never no more
Will I play the wild rover,
No never no more

I went to an alehouse I used to frequent,
And I told the landlady me money was spent
I asked her for credit, she answered me, "Nay",
“Such custom as yours I can find any day"

And it's no, nay, never! (Bum bum bum bum)
No nay never no more
Will I play the wild rover,
No never no more

I took from my pocket ten sovereigns bright,
And the landlady's eyes opened wide with delight
She said, "I have whiskeys and wines of the best,
And the words that I spoke so were only in jest"

And it's no, nay, never! (Bum bum bum bum)
No nay never no more
Will I play the wild rover,
No never no more

I'll go home to my parents, confess I’ve gone wild,
And I'll ask them to pardon their prodigal child
And if they forgive me as oft-times before,
I never will play the wild rover no more

And it's no, nay, never! (Bum bum bum bum)
No nay never no more
Will I play the wild rover,
No never no more

And it's no, nay, never! (Bum bum bum bum)
No nay never no more

Will I play the wild rover,
No never no more

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Merry Wives of Windsor's song Wild Rover tell the story of a man who has been living a wild and reckless life for many years, spending all his money on pleasure, particularly whiskey and beer. However, he has returned home with a great deal of gold and has decided that he will no longer play the "wild rover." The lyrics then proceed to describe a scene in which the man goes to an alehouse and asks the landlady for credit, only to be refused because of his history of reckless spending. He then produces ten sovereigns, which he uses to purchase the finest whiskeys and wines.

The final verse of the song reveals that the man intends to go home to his parents, confess his wild ways, and ask for their forgiveness. If they grant him his wish, he vows never to be the "wild rover" again. The lyrics are said to be a cautionary tale about the dangers of drinking and living a reckless lifestyle. It serves as a reminder that one's actions often have consequences, and there is always a price to be paid for excess and indulgence.

My comment was about the ''I'll Miss Missing You'' song listed on the ''Here's to the Men'' album.

Number 4 on this playlist is NOT a song by MWoW. It is a piece of garbage about an ''unretouched photo of the Brady Bunch.'' It need to be removed and MWoW's song ''I'll Miss Missing You'' put in it's place.
