Àfrica
The Meters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take me back
Hold my hand
All the way back
To the motherland
Take me back
I want to go back

Take me back
And my funky ass band
All the way back
To the motherland
Take me back

I want to go
As fast as I can
Slidin' on back
To the motherland
Now children
Africa...

I want to get up and go
With my funky ass jams
All the way back
To the motherland
Take me back
I want to go back

Africa...

Where the women
Is the women
And the man
Is the man

I want to go
As fast as I can
Slidin' on back

To the motherland
Now children

Overall Meaning

The Meters’ song “Africa” is an upbeat, funky tune that is both an ode to and a yearning for the continent of Africa. The lyrics express a desire to return to the “motherland” and highlight the beauty of African people, specifically the women and men. The line “where the women is the women and the man is the man” can be read as a celebration of African culture and the ways in which gender roles are defined differently in various parts of Africa.

The repetition of “take me back” and “I want to go back” creates a sense of urgency and longing, and the lyrics “slidin’ on back” and “as fast as I can” suggest a physical desire to return to Africa. The use of the phrase “funky ass” to describe the band adds a playful, irreverent tone to the song, while the “children” that the singer addresses towards the end create a sense of communal singing and celebration.

@elblopex

Hollywood, if you want me to stay, subterranean homesick blues, higher ground, fire, they're red hot. These are all covers. Im sure im missing one or two. They also played a bunch more when they performed live. Especially in the late 80s and early 90s
