Say Goodbye to Your Generation
The Methadones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Can't you see our generation's going down the tubes?
The more we keep looking back we can only lose
Remember when we were kids hanging out?
Feeling alright thinking we're on top?
Well now the whole damn generation's going down the tubes

We sit around and think about what lies ahead
We know there's no going back and it fills us with dread
Remember when we were kids hanging out?
Feeling alright thinking we're on top?
Well now the whole damn generation's going down the tubes

Say goodbye to your generation
I'm left wanting more than what we could do
Say goodbye to your generation
Yeah, that's right I'm talking to you

Say goodbye to your generation
I'm left wanting more than what we could do
Say goodbye to your generation
Soon to be forgotten for something new

We never thought it would ever turn out like this
Every once in a while I can't help feeling pissed
Some of the things we stood for just don't matter anymore

The whole damn generation's going down the tubes
Say goodbye to your generation

Overall Meaning

The Methadones's song Say Goodbye to Your Generation is a reflection on the lost hope and frustration of the current generation. The lyrics of the song talk about how the current generation is going down the tubes and how constantly looking back only brings more loss. The song starts with the singer questioning if the audience can see how their generation is going down the tubes, and how looking back only makes things worse. The lyrics recall the good old days of the past when they were kids hanging out, but now everything has changed. The whole generation feels lost and unsure about what lies ahead, and they're filled with dread because they know there's no going back. They had once felt on top of the world, but now the whole generation is sinking.

The repeated line, "Say goodbye to your generation," signifies that it's time to let go of the past and embrace the future. The singer is left wanting more than what they could do, and they know their generation will soon be forgotten for something new. The song, in a way, mourns for the younger selves of the people and the time, which is forever gone. The frustration of the situation can be felt in the lyrics, where the singer states that some of the things they stood for don't matter anymore, and they never thought it would turn out like this. It's a harsh reality check that comes with aging, but at the same time, it's an opportunity to look forward and make things better.

Re-ripping my CD collection and found The Methadones' album, Career Objective, with a pick tucked into the jewel case...
Suddenly I'm transported to the Turf Club in St. Paul, MN.. and I'm probably there because one of my brothers said "these guys are awesome, you should see them" and they were, indeed, awesome. Pretty sure the pick was spit out at the crowd...So it's probably got some 10 year old germs on it... but what great memories... and what a great song. :)
