Another Brick In The Wall
The Mick Lloyd Connection Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Daddy's flown across the ocean
Leaving just a memory
Snapshot in the family album
Daddy what else did you leave for me?
Daddy, what'd'ja leave behind for me?
All in all it was just a brick in the wall
All in all it was all just bricks in the wall

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of The Mick Lloyd Connection's song Another Brick In The Wall tell the story of a father who has traveled far, leaving nothing behind but a memory. The memory he has created is captured in a snapshot, which has been placed in the family album. The singer, presumably the son of the father, asks what else his father has left behind for him. This question seems to indicate a feeling of emptiness or abandonment, as if the father's departure has left a void that cannot be filled by the mere remembrance of him. The repetition of "Daddy" adds a sense of desperation to the question, as if he is searching for something more meaningful than just a photograph.

The final lines of the verse, "All in all it was just a brick in the wall / All in all it was all just bricks in the wall" suggest a metaphor for the father's absence. The "wall" could represent the son's life and the experiences that make it up. The father's departure is just one brick in this wall, but it is a significant one because it has left a lasting impression. At the same time, it is just one of many bricks that will make up the wall of the son's life. This juxtaposition of significance and insignificance, of permanence and transience, is the central theme of the song as a whole.

We don't need no education
We don't need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teacher, leave them kids alone
Hey, teacher, leave them kids alone
All in all, it's just another brick in the wall
All in all, you're just another brick in the wall
We don't need no education
We don't need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers, leave them kids alone
Hey, teacher, leave us kids alone
All in all, you're just another brick in the wall
All in all, you're just another brick in the wall
If you don't eat yer meat, you can't have any pudding
How can you have any pudding if you don't eat yer meat?
You! Yes, you behind the bike stands
Stand still, laddy!

I was in the 5th year at school, when this was released. It sounds as good now, as it did then. A true masterpiece.

@Samhalta

It depends though. I did go to a school that was very "conventional" and asked a lot of its students, but that's also where I learned critical thinking. Which now allows me to question some of the stuff I was taught, but mostly what I wasn't taught. Of course my school was very different from the reality of British schools at the time Roger Waters would have frequented them.
