WAKE ME UP
The Microphones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(wake me up)
While I slept you came in through the window.
(morning sun)
I heard you whisper my name.
Your voice was the singing of birds.
From where I was you sounded far away
But slowly I floated towards the sound I was hearing.
The sound of you whispering to me.
I let go and opened my eyes.
Once I let go I forget where I was.
I squinted my eyes in the sun.

I caughht a few glimpses and everything was bright.
It was you I was seeing in sunlight.

Overall Meaning

The Microphones' Wake Me Up is a song about being woken up from a deep sleep by someone special. The song begins with the sleeper being woken up by the person they love coming in through their window, which suggests a level of intimacy and familiarity. But as they hear the person whispering their name, their voice sounds like the singing of birds, which is a beautiful metaphor for the transcendent feeling of waking up from a dream.

As the person wakes up, they feel like they are floating towards the sound they are hearing. This can be interpreted as a symbolic journey back to reality or the present moment. They describe the sun as being bright and blinding, which mirrors the intensity of the feelings they have for the person who woke them up. Ultimately, they see the person they love in the sunlight, which is likely metaphorical for the idea that their love is like a light that shines bright even in the darkest moments.

Overall, Wake Me Up is a beautiful and poetic exploration of the feeling of waking up to the person you love. It captures the dreamlike quality of that moment while also emphasizing the intensity of the emotions involved.

The production on this makes me think of PIL’s Metal Box. It’s as important to the whole sonic effect as the vocals, bass, etc. No rules and experimentation run wild. I love that about it.

Thank you so much for uploading and doing an elegant job of it. Phil Elverum's work has such a special place in my heart, for over 20 years! I can't help but feel I grew up with him in a way, and sometimes you just need to hear an album right quick when you're in a listening mood!

listening these beautiful songs once against realised me how vast
amount of beautiful songs this planet got and how small of these we have listened till this day.
It may sound foolish but I pray that in heaven we may have an eternal life and will be able to listen all the beautiful songs from earth.

Letz

Mashrur Rahman if your view of heaven is the christian one, you'll be kneeling towards God constantly and have no sense of self or any connection to this world and this world won't exist anymore. Have fun with that. By the way, Phil Elverum always encourages letting go of gods.

@Letz I pray that you look more into this, its not really as you say it is.
